Hi can anyone help I’ve been looking at supplements was thinking magnesium would help I do have bath flakes but often have a shower Solgar Magnesium with Vitamin B-6 Tablets - 100 tablets Solgar (19) - there is those on amazon Superior Source Extra Strength Vitamin D3 10000iu (10,000iu, 100 Instant Dissolve Micro Tablets) Superior Source (3) Are any of those any good. I take baclofen pregabilin and Amitripiline would any of those react with them Is there any other natural products would help. I’m looking at a 100mm long foam roller my legs arms, hip are really tight as are my ankles. Would a smaller roller be better for ankles. Thanks Emma
I think you can take almost any “mainstream” supplement - i.e. ordinary vitamins and minerals without any risk of them interacting with prescription symptom relief.
I would highly question the need to take 10,000iu D3 daily (I assume it would be daily?) unless you have been tested and know you are severely deficient. Having MS does not by itself mean you should be on these super-high doses, and at least one former regular here has overdosed by doing this without suitable monitoring of levels. To compound matters, the symptoms of overdose were very similar to those that might be expected as a normal part of MS anyway, so she was unknowingly making things worse, but assuming it was all the MS. So the moral is don’t take super-strength supplements without medical supervision.
I wouldn’t get too hung up about the Vitamin B6 or the magnesium. I buy any cheap old supermarket or pharmacy brand - I actually buy calcium and magnesium combined, and a Vitamin B complex, rather than B6 on its own. I take them because I’ve read there’s a possibility they might be helpful, and also because I believe you shouldn’t supplement D3 (which I do, but not 10,000iu a day) without also increasing calcium and magnesium, as these all work together.
As far as any of it helping is concerned, I haven’t noticed a single improvement, so there’s a real possibility I could save money and ditch the lot. The big unknown is whether I’d be any worse if I didn’t take them, and that’s the main reason I still persevere - especially with the Vitamin D, as there’s growing evidence low levels correlate with risk of relapse. But as for feeling better? Nothing. I can genuinely say I feel the benefits of my prescription stuff, and this is confirmed by the fact I notice pretty quickly if I miss a dose - but not the same for any of the supplements. Don’t get your hopes up too much!

Emma, lts B12 we all seem to need more of. l take 750mg of magnesium at night . And l take 10,000ius of D3, as l cannot get my levels higher then 98. Have been having them checked at CityAssays every 6months. Magnesium helps the D3. B12 needs to be sublingual methylcobalamin 2000mcg.
l am thinking of trying a roller to help with muscles. You can get one that is ‘knobbly’ -rather then smooth.
ls there a college local to you that does courses for Sports lnjury Therapy. As they are good places to go for deep tissue massage -and they might only charge you a very nominal amount -or indeed maybe no charge at all. The students need a certain amount of case histories to qualify. And its been my experience, that they welcome people like us - with different problems then they normally get.
Somebody on this site posted about MSSential multivitamin supplements. lts a US ms group. l have tried them - over 30 vits/minerals/nutrients that are recommended for people with MS. You do need to take 6 a day. And they are large tablets. l think they are helping me - certainly more energy - so l will order more. lf you google MSSentials - you can read the contents and decide.
l have had SPMS for 32yrs - and will try most things that are vitamin/mineral/nutrient based - whereas l seem to react to prescription meds - the side effects usually worse then the symptoms they are supposed to be helping. As there is no cure for MS - yet - l think it is important that we keep ourselves as healthy as possible. Look after what we have got!!!
My dietician at ms centre said my vitamin d was low but doc said it was ok. Maybe I should find out the exact level. How does 750 magnesium work. Most I’ve seen is 400 with b6 and calcium supplement. This is all confusing lol x
I spent several weeks taking daily supplements of D3 (5,000 iu), B12 (2000 mcg) & Magnesium (200 mg). Didn’t notice any benefit.
I’ve stopped the supplements completely for the last 4 weeks and haven’t noticed any difference whatsoever in my physical condition (…certainly hasn’t gone downhill as a result of discontinuing).
Have to conclude, in this particular instance at least, that the supplements I was taking were a waste of money and completely unnecessary.

Taking vitamin supplements is NOT going to make a huge noticeable difference in your health but overall MAY have a positive impact on your long term health with MS. Most gps will look at vit d levels and say they are fine but that is for non ms people. More and more evidence points to elevated vit d levels being important for ms sufferers and their family. Most neurologists with experience in ms strongly recommend high dose vit d but few gps are fully aware of this. To emfraserburgh I would say 10000 a day is at the top end of safety and nearer 5000 a day is probably safer. You should give your children extra vit d too. Mine are on about 1500 a day as recommended by my neurologist. Although not at high risk of developing ms they are at higher risk and there is more evidence that raising their vit d intake helps lower that risk even more. Especially being from Scotland as we are famous for our easily available natural source of vit d (not!)
Thanks everyone for your replies. So to clarify 5000 vit d, should I take magnesium/calcium alongside. Am I. Right in thinking vitamin d works well alongside them. I know it may not make a difference but better safe than sorry With regards children. My son is nearly 5 and daughter nearly 1. Should I just give son and what she should I give my daughter. Em x
Em I take 5000 vitamin D daily, as advised by neuro and I take 375 magnesium daily as well GRay x
