I go along with Professor G’s suggestion (when do I not?) of 4000iu of vitamin D3 per day. But I also take a multivitamin because my diet is so rotten (stoma is a bugger!). And vitamin C because I suspect it helps the bladder if it’s more acidic.
Just confirming what others have said, though dosage amounts vary. It would be worth making the distinction between ordinary healthy levels and MS-specific supplements.
A starting point would be to take a multi-vitamins “catch-all”. The thing about vitamins is that if the body is obtaining sufficient levels of essential substances, any surpluses will just wash through.
As for MS-specific, there are two categories.
In the first you have D3 and as per the Prof G article referred to above by
whammel, there is a connection between Vit D and MS. Nobody is sure if MS causes low Vit D or if people with low vit D are more susceptible to contracting MS. For obvious reasons, there has never been a trial of people “about to get MS” to determine whether Vitamin D is the chicken or the egg… Dosage suggests 3000IU typically and increasing to 6000IU daily during GMT hours (winter) though being a larger build mine are 4000IU tablets. Since diagnosis, I’ve made sure my kids (26 & 17) take a Vit D supplement because they are at greater risk of MS, plus my daughter works nights so is getting little or no sunlight anyway.
The second set deals with energy & fatigue, so supplements such as Magnesium (375mg/day), Fish oil Omega 3 (660mg EPA, 440mg DHA), Co-enzyme Q10 (100mg) are ones that I take. To be honest, I take them because i’ve read that it’s a good idea to do so but the only one I could feel the difference in energy was the Fish oil but perhaps I was just having a good day! Vitamin B12 can also be very important - see Vitamin B12 - Wikipedia - but my blood tests have all shown my levels to be fine. The biggest issue is one of absorption.
I suppose there is a third category: vitamin depletion due to other medications. I take a Potassium supplement periodically because a blood pressure tablet appears to wash out potassium from my system - your own blood tests could point out your own susceptibilities.
Agree with the others above. Also look into Alpha lipoic acid.
Another to consider is Nicotinamide Riboside (if you have lots of money - it isn’t cheap) or, if you haven’t got lots of money, then Vit B3 Nicotinamide with Essential TMG and Trans-resveratrol (in one tablet, rather than seperately), which gives you the building blocks and is much cheaper. I take the cheap one!
Plenty of scientific papers on their use and possible benefit for MS.
