My mobilty is currently on a fast decline, walking more than 100 yards wipes me out. And if I go to shops I now use a chair. However, yesterday I went swimming. I’m getting fed up of not being able to exercise so I thought I’d give it a try.
Got in the pool and swam a length, my arms did tire quickly, but when they did I rolled on my back and swam/floated leisurely for a bit, then rolled back over and continued swimming breast stroke. Finished my first length, and rested for a bit. I did this in total about 8 times. Having a big rest in between and although I felt my muscles tire, I didn’t feel ‘ill’ like I do when walking.
I was expecting a big pain difference today, but I just feel heavier than I nornally do and bit more achey but nothing drastic!! So I am really pleased!
Anyone else found they’re ok at swimming, or any other exercise, but struggle with the walking? My main bad thing about walking, (or even plain old housework) is not just the fatigue wiping me out and my muscles aching and giving up, but the horrible ‘ill’ feeling. I’m just so pleased I didn’t get that with swimming.
Hi, I am so pleased for you that you have found swimming so helpful, without being totally wiped out.
i used to be able to swim, even after I couldnt walk at all. That was a few years ago.
But all swimming ability has gone now…about 3 years ago. Then even when i had 2 carers in the water with me, i still couldnt swim at all. In fact i felt so scared of drowning, as I kept going on my side and under the water!
yes I love Swimming and have also found that it doesn’t knacker me like other forms of exercise do. Started only do 5 or 6 lengths but cab comfortable do 15 or so at a time now (with lots of rest) James
Hi , I love swimming too. Even aftere a days work, and looking after my 3 children I can do about 20 lengths , with lots of rest breaks. I try to go once a week. I feel free when in water and I can relax. Just a little bit stiffer the day after. It’s so much easier the walking ! Hope
Hi, I started swimming again about 4 months ago, try to do it three or four times a week. I can now manage almost 15 minutes, my back no longer constantly aches, I am feeling a little brighter and although my legs and arms feel stronger I sadly cannot walk more than a few yards still, very much hoped that would get to be further, can only assume its fatigue rather than a mobility problem, never the less the other improvements are wonderful. x
i have been going swimming for about six months love it as I can do more in the pool than on dry land, I swim a little chat a lt then swim again, which helps with energy levles, the folk that go are always cheery so it helps with keeping me sain.Missing it today as I have the cold sore throat etc so feeling sorry for myself
