Hi there
This is the first time on this forum and I hope someone can advise. I use a wheelchair but can use crutches for short distances. I am comfortable flying with my chair as I have some independence left
My wife has had a small stroke which means that she can no longer push me if there are awkward slopes or hills. We both need a holiday and would love one in Europe somewhere.
Can anyone please advise as to the best locations for wheelchairs (access as well as gradients) ?
Hi Mark I live in Vienna and use a wheelchair. It has a excellent transport system and is very disabled friendly. Most European cities have good facilities for disabled travellers. Hopebyou find & have a good holiday.
Hi Mark
There isn’t a blanket answer as all major European cities are ancient. All are bound by the same accessibility legislation but some facilities are more disability- friendly than others.
Just try using the London tube network for a perfect example. Some stations have access from street level to platforms, seamlessly, others have it for certain platforms on certain lines. I went recently from Kings Cross to Euston and needed 3 different lifts in different parts of Kings Cross but got to Euston and missed the lifts somehow and ended up folding my chair and taking it up the escalators and carried up the final flight with a little help from kind passers-by. In short, it can be done but much research required. Clearly, I still got it a bit wrong but I have to make the same journey this coming Tuesday…
Much of Spain is good. Barcelona in particular, and beach resorts have nice level promenades with restaurants, cafes and bars. I’ve not been but I’m told the Netherlands is very disabled friendly. Research online might help. Good luck.
Yes, another vote here for Cruising! Better still if you depart from Southampton: check in & on-boarding time are a doddle compared to using airports. From pulling up dockside in the car, we were tucking into a lunchtime pizza on board inside an hour!
