Stuck in my car

Bizarre happening on Thursday; popped outside to retrieve some gardening gloves from my pick-up which was parked on the verge out the front. Standing at driverside door I saw them in the passenger side footwell, so lay across both seats to reach them. Suddenly heard the whirr of an electric motor start shuttling the driver seat forward, quickly jamming my lower back tight against the steering wheel. Visions of a pig being progressively squeezed by a python. Tried to extricate myself with my one free arm but found there were no useful controls I could reach, not even the horn. Tried to slide out from the seat but only managed to dislodge my joggers, uncovering my incontinence brief/nappy. Now I really felt trapped because there was no way I was going to want to attract any neighbour or passerby to come to my assistance. Fretted for 20 minutes trying to come up with some ingenious move when suddenly heard my older son ‘laughing like a drain’ at the side of the car. He had got out of bed and looked out of a window and was wondering why he could see my legs sticking out from the car door. I had a major sense of humour failure of course! That evening I had a further mishap when I popped out again in a pair of boots with the laces undone. As one boot swung forward past the grounded boot, its D ring locked onto a lace cleat on the other boot , bringing me tumbling heavily down on the concrete drive.

Not your day, then! I hope that today is being a nicer one.

Sounds like you had a tough day. People here will understand the frustration and potential embarrassment. I hope that you are having a much better time now.

I am wondering if this kind of seat entrapment is a recognised hazard (I recall reading cases of asphyxition of small children by electric car windows); not that it physically endangered me but the motor applied a considerable amount of force.

There was a tragic incident a year or so ago with a young man having something similar happen. It was a foldaway seat rather than an electric seat. He’d just leaned over to get his sports gear.

You’ll know not to do that again. I’m glad my car seats are not electric!

Superficially amusing but can happen with consequences far more horrible than your experience. Lots of design thought has gone into gear changes, handbrakes etc. but electric seat controls are but a sideshow by comparision. Needs to change.

Oh how awful to not even to have been rescued despite the calls.
