Hello, I was recently diagnosed in October 2012, I was wondering if anybody has difficulty with their legs and feet when resting? If I sit down to have a cup of tea and a rest, my legs are so restless I can not keep them still, I get this very weird and annoying sensation where my legs feel really itchy on the inside? I feel I have to stretch my legs, stamp my feet etc. to relieve it, Is their any medication or natural therapies that I can use to stop this, It makes sitting in cars as a passenger very difficult, seeing live shows the movies etc. I have even ripped a hole in the bottom sheet on my side of the bed by stretching my legs and being restless in my sleep!
Hi Ropinerole apparently works very well for restless legs but if it’s spasms and jerking around or buzzing, I have found amytriptyline to be very effective with little side effects. Xx
Hi, you could try drinking soda water, it contains quinine it’s meant to help restless legs, I suffer with it, it didn’t do much for mine but it may help you, good luck not pleasant x
It would be worthwhile calling your MS nurse for advice. I know there are various meds for restless legs, but it sounds to me like there is more than that going on and it might need something a bit different, maybe a neuropathic painkiller like amitriptyline (as MrsH said), gabapentin or pregabalin.
Bananas, mushrooms and anything containing quinine (e.g. tonic water) are supposed to help with spasms, but I’m not sure about restless legs. Might be worth a try though!
Restless legs and stiff legs for me. For both I do lots of stretches. Also take magnesium which reduced problems. Stopped magnesium for a while as sick of taking so many tablets. Problems with legs returned. So back on the magnesium and things are better Hugs Min xx
Could you advise how much magnesium you take, I was drinking tonic water which helps but have started amtripilyn and was advised not to take quinine with it.
Thank you, Thank you to all of you! and I like the sound of the Quinine in the tonic water! Am I aloud to add a splash of Gin too??? lol! And I am off to the Naturopath on Friday and will get her to give me some magnesium then! I think I would prefer to stick to something natural as I hate taking drugs at the best of times! Glad also I am not the only person out their with the same problem! If my times are a little odd I am not sleep deprived I am just from Australia!
I think I’m right in saying that if you take magnesium, you have to take calcium with it…I can’t remember why, but that was the advise my nurse gave me and certainly the tablets that I take are a combo of both. And yes, gin is good !!!
I was prescribed clonazepam for twitching legs, which works like a dream for me. If I forget to take my little pill before I go to bed, I get woken up by the twitching and have to get up and take it.
