Restless Arm Syndrome...

Hi everyone, Starting last night, about an hour before bedtime, I began to get a weird feeling in my upper arms. Seems to be mostly in my biceps muscle area. The feeling is quite hard to describe; I just have a desperate need to move my arms - to stretch them, to just move them with twitchy, jerky movements. This morning the feeling had completely gone but has slowly returned over the course of the past few hours - not as bad as last night yet. Fortunately, my bedtime combo of amitriptyline, melatonin and herbal sleep aid tablets knocks me out almost as soon as my head hits the pillow and I wasn’t woken up during the night at all. In consultation with Dr Google this morning, I’ve found that there is such a thing as restless arm syndrome, which is part of the same condition as restless leg syndrome. I’ve never had restless legs but I understand it’s encountered in people with MS more frequently than non-MS folk. Cant find reference to restless ARM syndrome and MS, but presumably it’s all part of this Restless Limb Syndrome. Has anyone else had this? What have you found helps ease the odd sensations? Or has anyone with restless leg syndrome found something that helps? Thanks

Hi

I used to get the restless leg thing exactly as you’ve described with your arm. I had it for ages before getting diagnosed and it used to drive me mad. Since being diagnosed, I’ve been taking Gabapentin and Baclofen and since then it’s stopped completely.

Hope this helps.

Hi,I’ve had restless arms.It was recent and over a period of a few months. It lasted 10-30 minutes, always in the evening.I sometimes get it now.It is a strange feeling.

I told my neuro about this. Can’t remember what his reply was.

Take care,Brenda x

Hi - yes I too get restless arm syndrome - usually just my right arm. It’s blinking uncomfortable - haven’t mentioned it to GP or neuro- I take enough tablets and potions and don’t want any more. I used to take magnesium for restless legs which sorted them out. But it was like having to swallow enormous horse tablets. Getting back to restless arm -So I just put up with it like a lot of other things -sorry in a real poor me head tonight. Sleep tight Min xx

Hi

I can get this, and like Min says I take magnesium pills for it, which always quickly sorts it out.

Thanks for your input folks! Much appreciated  I found a couple of upper-arm stretching exercises to do yesterday and this helped a lot. I do take a magnesium supplement normally but I ran out a few days ago and haven’t replaced them yet…! So the magnesium link certainly makes sense. I have to go to Boots this afternoon anyway, so I’ll re-stock. xx

I’ve not had restless arms, but I’m currently having battles with restless legs. It mostly happens when I lie down. A minute in and I can feel it start up…that nagging need to move my legs. Usually it’s just one, but I’ve had both annoy me at the same time. Usually I try to roll over on one and that helps to suppress that urge to ‘move.’
