We have made the big decision to relocate back ‘home’ after living in Kent for most of our marriage. I have had ppms for 25 years and a wheely user and our idea is to move back now that my hubby has retired due to ill health. Home was Cheshire (40 years ago) and we’re sure we’d be happy to be back there it’s where our remaining rellies are at least. My experience of MS services whilst living in Kent have been absolutely awful and I really want to avoid any pitfalls with hospitals in the future…just the thought of moving again is scary enough SO, if anyone can give any feedback on where to aim for/avoid as regards ms care I would be hugely grateful. We like the idea of Wirral and Cheshire and also (wildcard) North Yorkshire - Skipton area. House will be going on the market very soon so I really need to narrow my areas down.
I have been in your position. I have SPMS and moved from the Wirral to South Yorkshire in 2000 when I was fit and well. However, as it is a progressive condition and North Sheffield was not right for me - hills, steps, etc. I moved back to Wirral for so many reasons including facilities, 4 years ago. Where else would you get:
Theatre, cinema, beach, train stations, buses, taxis, the biggest prom in the UK, cafes, doctors, dentists, shops, restaurants, flat landscape (ideal for wheelies), ferry boats and all this is within ‘pushing’ distance of a few minutes?
I am glad I moved otherwise I would have been totally housebound by now. You do need to think of the present and the future with a progressive condition.
Hi Elaine, York is North Yorkshire, its flat wherever you go, the MS service at York Teaching Hospital is very good, the MS group is very good, there is an MS Therapy centre on the York side of Leeds with decompression chambers etc., an excellent OT and Authority services, all have been found and used as we needed them. Please have a look at my other posts to Maude regarding property. I have a ready made house currently for sale, designed from the ground up, with all the details which I have posted today in the Forum. I moved with my wife with MS and who used a power chair from a hopeless house in Leeds to here in York. This is a ‘Lifetime Home’ designed for easy modification as needs arise. If I can be of help to you please ask.
Firstly, massive apologies for not replying sooner. I had been quite unwell for a couple of weeks totally overwhelmed by the prospect of moving and totally missed everyones helpful suggestions. My house is now on the market and stressed like you wouldn’t believe but can’t wait to move!
JackieVanilla,
It’s good that you love Weymouth area and hopefully more services will arrive for you in terms of MS therapy anyway, here’s hoping for you and good luck for September x
Marty,
We are both Wirral people I was born in Wallasey and always dreamed of retiring to Parkgate - potted shrimps and ice cream, what’s not to like We took a trip back there a couple of years ago, but stupid us, didn’t realise that there was a MAJOR golf championship on and there was not a hotel (disabled anyway) room to be had for miles so reluctantly had to cut our trip short. Your views have been very helpful to us and it will definitely be our first port of call - many thanks x
Yorky,
Many thanks for sharing your absolutely breathtaking property, it is most definitely future proofed which is exactly what I hope for. I just can’t quite make that area right for us unfortunately but I’m sure you’ll have no trouble selling. Have you tried using the accessible property register? just a thought.
Thanks for the suggestion and yes I have. Other varied agencies too as I am trying to sell this house to someone who can benefit from its facilities. I am in a situation where demand outstrips supply but am resisting selling to house hunters who would strip out the facilities I incorporated and paid heavily for. If it has to be then so be it. I have equipment to find good homes for too so to eBay and others I go! TTFN.
