Anyone in Sheffield

I’m thinking about moving from Edinburgh to Sheffield. Can anyone tell me what life is like there for someone with MS. I’m a full-time wheelchair user, but live independently. I’ve needed regular carers in the past so probably will again

It might be worth asking the local Sheffield branch.

I lived in Sheffield for 20 years. A very nice city, with plenty going on and excellent range of facilities. Great countryside right on the doorstep too. Public transport used to be good, and very cheap, and it has the tram.

People there are very friendly, so that is a big plus. Often described as feeling like a big village rather than a city.

It is very hilly, so your wheelchair will need good brakes and power!

It has two excellent hospitals. The MS society will be able to tell you what their MS services are like. It used to be good. Just make sure you don’t get seen by the neurologist whose main interest is in FND and movement disorders. As you have MS that is unlikely though. Their movement disorder clinic was abysmal. I ended up asking to get referred to Newcastle.

Hi Lindsay
I’ve been in Sheffield for about 27 years now and really like it. Like Ziola says, it’s like a big village. It has big city amenities, without it feeling intimidating like other big cities. I’m on wheels too, and it’s not uncommon for strangers to start talking to me on the tram or just say hello as they walk past. The main downside are the hills, so you need to make sure you live near in the right place. I’ve got a tram stop, tesco, doctors, my church, cafes and a short riverside walk all within half a mile of my flat.

Personally I’ve never had any problems with the MS team here. I also live on my own, so get Direct Payments to employ a PA. I’ve also been able to get referrals to Occupational Therapists. They’ve been great (currently waiting for a wet room conversion, and a few changes to my kitchen). Waiting lists are ages though, but I guess that’s the same everywhere.

When are you thinking coming down?

Dan

I’ve been diagnose for just over two years and found the service at the hallamshire hospital really good and the MS nurses too. I’m not originally from Sheffield but lived here for 20 years and love it. Best bits of countryside and living (PS I’m originally from just outside Edinburgh)
