I’ve had this horrible pressure, slight dizziness in my head now for a couple of months now. I know it’s been brought on by a stressful situation at home (my dad now lives with us and things aren’t really working out).
I’ve had to take this week off work (I am a solicitor and would struggle to have a clear head in court). I’m due to see my GP on Thursday morning but know he has no MS experience. I am due to have a telephone appointment with an MS nurse on Wednesday morning because I want to ask her what I should ask my GP to prescribe.
I feel like I want to shake my head vigorously to get rid of all the fuzziness in my head.
I often describe these symptoms to my consultant as a feeling that my brain is swollen and I don’t want to move my head but he always corrects me and says the brain doesn’t get swollen - it is just pressure. I only tell him how I thinks it feels.
What do you think the doctor should prescribe for me?
I had something similar and gp thought it was something to do with the ear probably caused by ms. I got tablets and they worked but can’t remember what they are called. I get pressure in my feet of all places.
Hi Angie, I do sometimes feel there is a pressure in my head, and also I suffer from tinnitus which feels like a pressure.
I find it strange that you neuro would say the brain doesn’t swell with MS…well I suppose the whole brain does not swell, but there is inflammation and surely that means swelling?
I think Mags is right though. It might well have something to do with your ears and I think you should suggest that to your GP. That would certainly cause dizziness as well. Ask to be referred to ENT specialist. Don’t be fobbed off with an audiology appointment…I was and have to say she was completely useless!
Hope the GP can give you something to help. One more thing, I’m sure your job is extremely stressful…and MS and stress do not go well together. Might be worth thinking about how much stress you are under at work and if there is any way to reduce it.
(This is my second try to respond to your post. I was almost finished when it just disappeared) It doesn’t “save”!! Grrrr! Here goes!
I was diagnosed with PPMS last summer with noticeable symptoms since Nov 2014. Since last spring I have the buzzing/humming, very similar to your description with occasional tinnitus. It is sometimes distressing when the “pressure” seems worse and rather scary too. If I am stressed it can seem worse. I do wonder why your neuro dismissed your buzzing without actually accepting what you described. This can be frustrating to say the least. Please don’t shake your head, it may only make it worse. When this first started it may me feel like this too.
I have put this down to my having had cognitive hearing loss and middle ear infections since infancy. Perhaps it isn’t? Mags and Pat are probably on the right track. MS is no respecter of persons and each of us has a different set of symptoms to deal with.
I would run your symptoms over with your MS nurse and ask which medications may help. I will do the same. If she/he contacts your GP to recommend meds then you can ask them (GP) to prescribe those for you. I’ve done this on several occasions. Most GPs have limited knowledge of MS unless they specialise in neurological conditions.
I do feel for you having the added stress of your dad at your home. You need to discuss this with your nearest and dearest rather than continue with this unhappy situation for both of you. Yes, stress does make MS symptoms worse although I’m not sure why? When I wear my bone anchored hearing aid this masks the humming and tinnitus. I should really raise this with my GP again as it verges on the painful at times.
I really hope your situation improves once you have control over your symptoms and your home life too.
Agree with the advice already given. I’d suggest maybe inhaling some Olbas oil on a tissue. I get really horrid tension headaches if my sinuses get congested. I literally have to gently press/push against my face just by my nose to even inhale it properly when sinuses are really bad.
It is now a month on and the past week or so has been awful. On my way into work I get this sudden dizziness in my head that makes me feel that my mind is going “completely blank” and my eyes will go blind. I know that sounds so dramatic but I can’t think of another way to describe it. I sometimes have to shake my head, just once, to clear my head & brain.
The MS nurse didn’t recommend any medication last month so I’m not taking anything at present. I probably did feel slightly better for a while.
My colleagues in work told me to go home today because I felt so awful but I feel like I’d never be able to go back. I can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I have another phone consultation on Tuesday next week with the MS nurse so will have to be more insistent that something is done.
I’m blaming my MS but I’m worried that I might have something seriously wrong with my brain.
I must be clear that I am not diagnosed fully yet but the way you describe it sounds just like an attack I had recently that resulted in me going to A&E whilst abroad. They treated me for vertigo giving me an injection and sending me away with tablets for motion sickness which did help. I thought vertigo was the surroundings until this happened but like you describe it I had a dizziness in my head.
Not sure what would be prescribed in UK, but thought I would write to you as it was a terrible sensation.
Hi Anne i get the buzzing/humming its most days but bearable on a low volume, but boy if i am stressed or coming down with a UTI, its horrible, it is so loud i could scream. The way i deal with it, is i do something to try and calm me down, like watch a movie, or play a silly game or do some online shopping.
Its really scary when it goes full belt and i feel like my head will explode. UGH horrible symptom one of the worse for me with MS, alongside the fleas in my hair lol. xxx
Just out of curiosity have you had your BP checked recently, and also had a test for UTI, as believe it or not mine gets worse with a UTI or ear infection which i get often, and also if my BP is up a bit. I think too you could be suffering stress related issues. xx
