Persistent lump in throat

Hi,I went to my doctor today as I have a persistent lump in my throat that won’t go away. I am also occasionally getting a horrible burning sensation in the roof of my mouth and up my nose. I can only describe it as being like gas fumes. It’s a totally different feeling from when stomach acid leaks into your throat which i also get occasionally and is also horrendous. My doctor checked my nose and throat and said I have probably a combination of sinusitis (this was picked up on my head MRI a few weeks ago) and acid reflux. He has prescribed me a nasal spray and higher dosage of omeprazole. While I was with my GP we spoke about the MS investigations I have been having recently. I have another MRI , this time thoracic and cervical , at the end of this week. He did say that MS can cause gastric issues. I googled it a short time ago and the lump in the throat sensation appears quite common with MS although I am not sure if it is always due to gastric problems. Anyway, I suppose I can now add this to my list of other symptoms when I next see my neurologist. Just wondering if this is a symptom that forum members here can recognise and if so did you manage to get it treated effectively because this lump in my throat is driving me insane.

Hi, hope you get these symptoms sorted. I’ve had a lump type feeling that turned out to be a nasal drip, which spray has helped. I’m not diagnosed with ms, well not yet anyway. Hope you feel better soon x

I’m not disagreeing with your GP but it could be hyperthyroidism Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) - NHS Just a possibility.

Good luck

George

Hi George, not thyroid. I had a blood test a couple of months ago and my thyroid is fine. Xx

Thanks Daisy. I will give the nasal spray and antacids a go and hopefully they will do the trick. I hope you get your diagnosis soon. Xx

Hello

I have had RRMS for nearly 20 years and about 5 years ago I developed this lump in my throat sensation.I discussed it with my ms nurse and have copies of the letter/notes she made re this. Also discussed with GP who referred me to ENT. She examined me and said it was symptom of acid reflux and prescribed omeprazole and gaviscon. They didn’t have any affect. Gp then prescribed different anti depressants again no effect. I have just learnt to live with it.Sometimes it is more noticeable than other times but I am sure it is related to MS. I have just developed an ear problem like tinnitus which is driving me mad and again I think it is MS related as am having another relapse.

Keep a note of it to show any health professionals. Hope you get some answers.

Cathy

Hi Cathy, thanks for your reply. The ‘lump’ has disappeared for now . It may well be acid reflux as I have increased the omeprazole I am taking and could be the reason for it going away. That said, I had a strange experience a few days ago. I was sitting in the car when I had this split second jab in my throat as if I had just been stabbed there. It made me cough for a minute or two but at the same time as this was happening I was getting the same random jabs on my legs and feet. The whole thing lasted just a few minutes. I will definitely mention this to my gp when I get my spine and neck mri results from her this week. I have got a diary where I have written down all the stuff that’s been happening since I saw the neurologist in June. My next appointment is scheduled for early January.
