Hi, I’m new to this I’ve had MS for about 15 years but over the last 3 months have started getting the feeling of a lump in my throat. It doesn’t hurt but it’s just uncomfortable when swallowing. I’ve read that this could have something to do with the ms. I’ve also lost my voice for the last 3 weeks (I’m told I sound like Marge Simpson)…has anyone else had this? Any advice? Thanks
Hello Nic and welcome. I also have problems with my throat and at times find it hard to swallow food or drink. If it occurs whilst eating, I don’t panic, I stop, cough and then swallow and find that the food does go down. It is embarrassing when eating out. Also I lose my voice, well not exactly lose it but it goes very croaky, so I stop speaking and rest my voice, then I can speak properly again. Hope this helps. Janet x
Hi Nic,
About 3 years ago I had this same problem as you a lump feeling in my throat. It didn’t hurt or stop me eating or drinking but it just felt wierd. I felt it more if I tried to dry swallow and my throat would tighten up. I thought it was due to stress and anxiety as my father was very ill at the time with dementia and I was so worried about my mum-I live 100 miles away from them. The lump feeling persisted and I mentioned it to my Neuro and MS nurse who thought it wasn’t MS related. I went to my GP and she referred me to an ENT and I had an endoscope. She said it was caused by acid reflux-this lump sensation is one of the symptoms. I was put on PPI meds which didn’t get rid of the feeling. My GP tried me on lots of different acid reflux meds but nothing seemed to help with this sensation. I have just lived with it- however just recently the sensation has not been as noticeable and some days my throat feels normal again- (at one point I thought it never would) So maybe it is an MS thing. I have had MS for 17 years. When I wrote about it on this forum a while ago one reply mentioned that her MS nurse told her that it is caused by a lesion affecting the throat and it could come and go like relapses I guess.
Hope this helps so basically it could be MS or it could be stress related or it could be due to acid reflux. Hope you get some relief from it soon and it doesn’t last as long as I had it
Cathy
