Hi all I’ve managed to find another cold to house again
this is a problem I’ve had on/off for ages with my throat feeling as tho there’s something blocking it by my voicebox
n feeling really tight but not so much sore is it just a me thing or do any of u lovelies suffer with this or something similar??? it’s been bothering me for years n seems to only happen in conjunction with possible relapses (not yet dx) advice would be most welcome Thanx Lou
Hi Lou, I do sometimes get the sensation that something is in my throat… like hair or wool but doesn’t last long (and maybe it is a hair stuck in my throat!)
Have you seen your GP about it? Might be something going on nothing to do with MS.
Also can be caused by stress. I know none of like to be told that a symptom is caused by stress but I know from personal experience… many years ago I went to the doctor certain there was something stuck in my throat… turned out to be a symptom of stress. Not saying yours is… but if you do feel very stressed it might be.
Anyway hon see the GP. Never assume that something is caused by MS.

Hi Lou I had the tight throat for about 3 years before my diagnosis, and it would come and go over a matter of months at a time. It wasn’t at first linked to MS at all …although it did in the end due to further swallowing issues. I don’t know if that is the same for you and the one thing I found important when I was in limbo was to keep an open mind…but do make sure you mention it to your neurologist when you see him…and as PatB said speak to your GP. hi ladies Thanx for ur input I feel as tho I’m going mad lol so nice to no it’s not just a me thing I do sometimes have trouble swallowing I’ll be fine n the all of a sudden it’s as if I can’t remember how to lol sounds mad doesn’t it haha or I just can’t physically do it Libby I’ve had this throat thing on/off for yrs n it lasts from a week or upto 3months is the longest it sometimes effects my voice so I sound like Barry White haha sexy I no lol it dose mostly happen if I’ve got a cold or feeling a bit run down I will note it down with everything else lol just in case any1 mite poss be interested in reading it lol Lou
Hi all, Don’t know if this helps but my speech therapist ( who also deals with swallowing issues) told me that there are three “nodule” type lumps at the back of the throat / oesophogus that “catch” your food and swallow it down, one at a time, from one to another. People with MS can have issues with these not working efficiently which results in feelings of stuck food etc. it can result in chest infections, so you may never have had a cold, as the food can go down the wrong way and end up somewhere it shouldn’t,msorry that bit is vague, your body then sees this as an alien body, hence infection sets in. I think she said it is called dysphagia. Her top tips when having problems are; Eat fork mash able food Don’t mix textures, only eat one type of food on each forkful Soft bread sticks, so eat toast or whole meal but not granary Remove skins on fruit, tomatoes etc as again a mix of textures will confuse Avoid fluid / solid combinations like chunky soups, milk and cornflakes Hope this helps
Good advice Mrs. H.
I also get it. The food just goes down to top of throat and everything stops. It’s a scary feeling. I try not to panic (easier said than done) and touch my throat. Touching it seems to remind the throat what it’s mean to do.
Obviously I touch the outside of my throat… front of neck… not sticking my hand down throat… lol…

Oh my goodness, Pat. I read the first bit of your post and gagged on your behalf!! It is a horrid feeling, but I have to say her tips have helped me no end.
hi Catherine Thanx for ur advice what u say does kind of make some sense it sort of does feel as tho I’ve got a lump there all the time n it makes me want to cough to try n clear the feeling away but as far as I’m aware these not anything actually stuck "/ it’s a very strange feeling indeed it’s def gotten worse over past 7/8 yrs I did mention it to a dr once upon a time but they said it wasn’t such n such but something else (he actually said “no it’s something else”) never actually told me what could be the cause but on the plus side it gives me the perfect excuse to have I’ve cream as the coldness seems to help
suppose if there’s any inflammation/swelling the ice cold helps just as an ice pack would on ur leg say silver lining n that lol Lou
Pat that’s sounds sort of familiar also the touching of ur throat I find that sometimes I find myself having to do that to I’m do so pleased that I’m not the only 1 I’d been ummin n arrin bout posting this problem for a while but so glad I did in the end Thanx every1
Hi Lou She did also say to drink chilled drinks as much as poss. She recommended milkshakes made with ice cream and also fruit smoothies to get the vitamins. Her ideal was bananas blended with ice cream!! Yucky!! And she said something about the cold helping but I forgot to write it down…sorry
that’s ok I’ll let u off lol I forget to write loads down lol bit bad when I’m at work "/ I set the oven timer for things n forget why I’ve set it haha I also find myself ‘forgetting’ to move my hands out the way when closing the oven doors or more classically forgetting that the thing I’ve just taken out of said oven will be hot lol bit of a worry some days but its not all the time Thanx god
I enjoyed my ice cream ( Ben n Jerrys Cookie Dough mmmmm) n I pretty much only ever drink cold drinks anyway I’m not a huge tea drinker Lou

I getcha Lou. I have lists for lists on scraps of paper all over the house. I even keep a notebook next to my bed now. The trouble is, I keep forgetting where the lists are!!! Xx
Good memory tip: if you have to do something as soon as you get up (eg phone someone) leave something in a place it’s not meant to be… eg slipper on bedside table or book on bathroom floor… as soon as you see it you’ll remember what you have to do.
Same if you go out and have to do something as soon as you get back… put storage jar on kitchen floor… as soon as you see it you’ll remember what you have to do.
It works a treat

That’s a great tip Pat - I must remember it! Lol. Teresa xx
