Oh help!

I just fell as I went outside to put some washing on the line. I overbalanced and hit my left side on a stone step and grazed my left knee. Lots of black bruises coming up! I fall fairly often due to my balance problems but usually onto a piece of furniture or someone catches me. This has really shaken me up as I couldn’t get up and had to shout until my 17-year-old son came and helped me up. It was scary and I feel quite shocked! Teresa xx

Oh no! Teresa this is such a shock to the system for you. I hope you feel steadier now. Looks like the washing will have to be hung out by someone else…at least today`s anyhow!

Whenever I have a fall/near miss, I study what I did and what, if anything, can be done differently the next time I am in the same siutation.

It brings it to the fore, just how vulnerable we are, eh? And that`s what really hurts.

Sit down with a nice cuppa and a choccy bikkie or two.

much love Polly x

Poor you Teresa! Horrible. It is such a shock when that happens.

Have a nice relaxing afternoon hon.

Hi Teresa

Poor you, it makes you realise how vulnerable we are, and

shakes you up. I wonder if a rollator would be a help to you.

Sit down, have a nice cup of tea and take it easy.

Pam x

Thank you lovely girls, I’m sure a rollator will be necessary eventually Pam but I want to manage as long as I can with just a stick. Your kind wishes help a lot! Teresa xx

Hope you are feeling a bit better now maybe you should get your son to hang it out in future. Or you could move near to me as all its done recently is rain so you wouldn’t be able to hang it out. Take care Xxx

((((((((((HUGS)))))))))) Teresa.

Scares you silly having a thumping fall. I had a crashing fall getting off the toilet of all places the other day. And my bathroom has been purpose designed as a disabled wetroom just for me so goes to show it can happen in spite of all due care being taken.

Before I got home help and therefore no longer need to hang my washing out I used to put the washing basket on the seat of the rolly walker and use that to get it out to the line. It also meant it was at a nice height to get the clothes from and I didn’t need to bend down. But if you’re not ready for a rolly walker how about one of those wheeled laundry stands that the basket drops into? That way you don’t have to carry it and it might give you a bit of stability as you push it to the line.

Take it easy for the rest of today though. Sounds like chocolate is now in order.

hope you feel better soon,it shocks you so much,

Thanks for your support girls. The shock is horrible, I can still feel it now. The wheeled laundry stand sounds good - thanks Belinda. I’ll have to look into that. Chocolate sounds good too. Any excuse for it will do! Teresa xx

Ouch Teresa - I really dread falling and I hope you’ve had some restorative chocolate by now. ((((hugs)))

Thanks Katrine, Still waiting for someone to take pity on me and go on a choccy run to the shop! Teresa xx

Oh Teresa I am so sorry about your fall, I do hope you get over the shock and don’t end up with to many bruises. If you recall I had a fall a couple of weeks ago and I still have the bruises to prove it, but when I go and hang my washing out I always use my rollator it is such a help. Wishing you a speedy recovery and send (((((HUGS)))))

Thanks Belinda, I did. I had some Toblerone which I adore. That really helped. Teresa xx

Since getting my rollator - l find l can do all sorts of jobs in the house and garden that l could not do before. l have a small round laundry basket which l can balance on the ‘seat’ of the rollator and go out to put the washing on the rotary line. l can put the brakes on and lean against it. Getting down the garden now possible - picking veg/feeding ducks and chicks - l even carry my plate of dinner on the seat -from the kitchen work top to the table. Can keep the phone/remote control/ books/glasses and most importantly - my chocolate in the ‘bag’ part.

A lovely neighbour took me to the theatre last night to see Pam Ayres. l decided l would take the rollator as l am not safe with a walking stick anymore. Alas, the seats were in the circle - out of my ‘comfort’ zone. Hardly any legroom and very steep with nothing much - apart from 'startled’theatre goers being grabbed hold of for support… When the '‘usher’ saw me with my rollator - she went all jobsworth - and said you can’t come in here with that - l explained it would fold down small - but No! Well l managed to get to my seat holding on to anything l could find - and sat there - not daring to get up in the interval. Another ‘usher’ came over to me during the interval and said he had moved my ‘warhorse’ [rollator] as near as he could to where we sat - which was very kind of him. Pam Ayres was fantastic - and l am glad l went. lt was quite a walk back to the parked car - a distance l would never of contemplated with a walking stick - but with a rollator l can walk and actually keep up with able-bodied friends.

l hate falling down as it is such a task trying to get back up - l find l do not ‘bounce’ anymore !! Bruise - yes.

Thanks for your insight into the pros of a rollator Frances. I am sure I will get there eventually but haven’t even been using my stick for a year. Want to not get to the next stage too quickly! That may sound daft but I want to try to stay me for as long as possible. Perhaps that means I haven’t quite fully accepted my MS dx yet. I don’t really know. Definite lack of bounce and plenty of bruising! Teresa xx

Hi Teresa, Hope you’ve got over the shock of your fall and stopped shaking. I see you’ve turned to chocalate, hum, good idea, enjoy.

Teresa,

l know exactly what you mean - took me a long time before l went ‘public’ with my rollator. Now l have two - one waiting for me at the top of my stair lift. l don’t think l did myself any favours managing with a stick for so long. With a stick - you are not really standing upright - you tend to lean to one side - which puts such pressure on your spine/joints.

l shall have to think how l can ‘pimp’ up my rollator as l expect it does ‘cramp’ my style!!!
