numbness question

Hi Everyone,

I had MRI + EMG several years that ago ruled out MS at the time, but have had a return of symptoms which has reluctantly had me back seeing my GP. My GP Noted issues with my Gait & Abnormal Reflexes, so next step for me is a Lumbar MRI to rule out disc issues (have history of that in my lower back)

A symptom I have this time, which didn’t occur previously is numbness. I had all kinds of odd skin sensations previously, but not actual numbness. Whereas this time, I have developed 2 numb toes on 1 foot, and a numb big toe on the other. I’m pretty sure the 2 toes went numb first, followed by the other foot, but that’s where the progression has stopped. On that front at least, the numbness has stayed put for the last 3 weeks.

My question is for anyone who experienced numbness, at what pace, if at all did it spread? I’m thinking if it were MS related it should have spread by now based on what I’ve read.

Just curious to hear of others experience with numbness, and whether this is likely something else, or potentially MS related.

(Blood work normal, so not likely Gout/Diabetes/Vitamin Deficiency.)

Thank you!

Numbness can be a symptom of ms. I’m currently undiagnosed but in the grips of flare up (GP called it that) so take my experience as not confirmed ms. My first symptom (alongside others) was a very quick spread of numbness through most of my body it subsided with Gabapentin but the numbness remained in my fingers. My latest started off with a patch of numbness on my wrist which has slowly over a few weeks spread to nearly my whole arm along with pain and a burning itch- ironic I can be numb but in pain also :woman_shrugging:t2: so I’ve had two different experiences in terms of time scale but the same symptoms non the less. Ultimately only investigation can prove or disprove and I hope you get some answers quickly!

For me, some relapses affecting extremities have either started there and then and moved up along the closest limb, and others have started on the torso and worked their way down. There are probably limitless variants. Usually but not always both sides have been affected, some exactly the same, some the same but more severe on one side. This applies with me to numbness and also loss of strength and proprioception. I do not think MS has a rule book. If it has, it ignores it when it feels like it.

Well, the numbness didn’t spread, but it did show up in my hands, along with some perceived weakness & coordination issues. My MRI is being increased to a full spine/brain I think.

I’m British, but currently live in the US. Pro’s are things move quickly over here, but the cons are you are never quite sure how much it’s going to cost until you get a bill from the hospital. :man_shrugging:
