no solace in slumber

hi gang, got up in a foul mood today. Why? Well does anyone else share this problem and have you found a solution?

I sleep on an air circulating mattress, in an effort to avert pressure sores, but these last couple of nights I have had a very cold upper back. I reckon it must be the air in the mattress that is cold…??? last night I tried putting a fleece cover over the top of the mattress. But as i have to lie on my sling, `cos if I dont, i cant hoist up quickly enough and Niagara Falls occurs mid flight!

So I lie on the mattress, which has a waterproof bed pad, my sling, the fleece and then me. Well it all got rucked up and lumpy and I was so uncomfortable and still on the cold side. i woke at all hours and wanted to get up. But couldnt as my poor hubby has to have some sleep and respite from me, eh?

Please avoid advising me to use a catheter…been there, experienced the pain, bleeding and yes…floods too.

Do you know, I am chuffin` fed up today!

Hello Poll, Might not be overly practical, but is there any way you could add a memory foam topper to your bed without increasing chance of sores? For various reasons, I slept on an air bed (albeit clever divan version!) for months. It was lovely & cool in the summer, but freezing once the weather turned. The simple addition of a topper solved the problem & was so comfy for my sore body that I now have it on the ‘proper’ bed. Just a thought. Hoping a restorative slumber comes your way soon. x

Thanks for your reply. yeh, it could help, but I think it would negate the value of the mattress. I have found a way to turn down the pressure to see if it helps. And i`ll be putting my hot water bottle in before i get in tonight.

Sorry you had such a bad night Polly. I can’t advise on the mattress as I don’t use an air circulating one yet!! I have many sleepless nights though and it does really drain you the next day. I hope you will sleep better tonight, think happy things!! Take good care luv Linda x

Hope you get a better night tonight Pol.

Hi Poll, must be nasty to spend all night rucked up.(Glad I spelt that right). Is there a way of using a hairdrier to warm up the mattress, either the inside or the top.I use self adhesive velcro for everything, well nearly.I wonder if some of the ‘hairy’ side could be stuck on the mattress so that it holds the fleece in place. It could still be carefully removed.'Praps a similar set-up using both sides of the adhesive velcro could be used for the mat.

If non of that is feesible 'owabout something like 6mm marine quality elastic(Amazon?) fixed to the corners with cable ties, and stretched under the mattress.

Oh,as for the widdling how about Digestive biscuits or something similar last thing to help ‘sop up’ any excess fluids ?

Put the kettle on and I’ll be round with all the gear to see what we can do!

Morning all. Ta so much for your concern and hoping I did bettter last night.

Well I did…heaps better!

I kept my long sleeved thermal vest on under my nighte and had a hot water bottle round my back.Gosh I looked alluring!

And reducing the pressure in the air mattress made a big difference too. You know that mattress cost £3k…courtesy of our wonderful NHS…phew!

So today i am a much nicer person!!
