Hi all, after been written off by first neuro I have been for a 2nd opinion. I am being sent for neuro physcometric tests has anyone been for these?
Hi,
I don’t have any experience of psychometric tests but I didn’t want to leave your question totally ignored.
When I was being investigated for symptoms of MS my neurologist did send me to see a psychiatrist.
After nearly an hour, of answering quite normal questions, the psychiatrist asked me questions like, “Do you hear voices in your head?.” (“No. I don’t.”)
Eventually when he asked me, “Do you hear voices on the radio talking about you?”. I snapped, “Not often enough”.
He said “You’re not depressed.” and that was the end of that.
I get the feeling that nervous disorders are a thing they have to eliminate on the road to diagnosis.
Regards,
Anthony
Thanks Anthony, I hope it will explain something, maybe that my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders! I am Pretty fed up with the vacant looks specialist do when you try to explain that you know there is something going on! I haven’t always been like so what’s changed?. If I could go back to how I was I would in a flash, one has said stress/depression! If I wasn’t before I bloody well am now. Thanks again
When you say you have been referred for neuro psychometric tests do you mean that you have been referred to a neuro psychologist? I have had 2 full assesments by a neuro psychogist post diagnosis and they have been very useful at identifying the serious cognitive problems MS has caused. They are very lengthy and intense sessions and finding out what cognitive defects you now have can be quite a hard pill to swallow (it certainly was for me because I had always prided myself on my intelligence)
Apparently there are only a very limited number of neuro psychologists in the UK (and they all know each other too!). You are quite fortunate to be referred to one - although you may not be feeling that fortunate.
Hi Boblatina
I sounded quite ungrateful so apologies for that, I think it is because people don’t explain fully why they are looking at referring you. I think they have ruled out MS with 1 clear brain scan, but i am struggling to believe all my symptoms have popped up in the last year 18mths, ( although some weird symptoms going back years to when I was a child ) I am pretty frustrated at how I keep going downhill and worried that if I don’t keep pushing and quickly my problems will escalate and I will lose the opportunity to maybe manage them. I have had so many things pop up! that I can’t explain and worry that the drugs are just masking things, although a lot of my brain type symptoms came on after surgery when I had weaned myself off the drugs so it can’t be them that is causing it all.
I am probably on the wrong forum now but all I can see on here are people that are very similar to me only to be told years later they have MS. I do believe that what ever it is if I knew it would help me to manage it as at the moment it is an uphill battle.
I am open minded about the Neuro Pyschometric ( thats what the neurologist called the appt) as at the moment I will go anywhere and see anyone if they can advise.
Thanks for replying.
Certainly didn’t think that you were “ungrateful”! I have been quite impressed with what the psychologist was able to discover about what was wrong with me and I am just a bit miffed that not everybody who needs their assesment can get it - to me, it’s a bit like being told "we haven’t got a MRI scanner here but don’t worry … "! OK my assesments were done post diagnosis but they were useful. Hopefully, yours might be of some help for you at the stage you are at. Good luck ![]()
