Medical licence, can I still drive Campervan 3.5 tonnes

I have to return my driving licence and will be issued with a 3 year medical licence which as far as I can gather will have category C removed (vans over 3.5 ton to 7 ton) I have a camper van max 3.5 ton. I can’t find anywhere if I will be covered by category B to still drive it. Has anyone else been thru this or able to help. Thanks

Same thing happens to people when they reach 70. By default the class is removed, so requires some extra medical questions to keep.
Whether you can drive the camper van very much depends on the detail. People who have gone through the paper exercise of increasing the allowed weight above 3.5 tons would not be allowed to drive it while they could drive one that had not gone through the paper exercise!

People who passed their test more recently did not get the permission to drive vehicles above 3.5 tons anyway.

Sorry not to be more help but the answer is in the detail. Small campers are no problem, monster motor homes are. If you are in the middle look at your documents and suss it out!

Hi thanks for responding. I don’t think I asked the question very clearly. My van is maximum 3.5. So as far as I can understand is currently covered under category B of a regular licence. So I’m wondering if I’ll still be covered on the medical licence? I’ve trawled about and I can’t see anything definitive about this. Only that I’ll loose my category C for over 3.5.
Hope someone can help. Thanks

Morning karenmorton787, I can’t answer this for you, but I know what I would do, I’d call the DVLA, and get it straight from the horses mouth.

Hi, I have a 3 year medical licence and at present can drive B1/B/BE vehicles, A class motorbikes and various under the jklnpq at the bottom of the list. Which is what I had prior to getting the medical licence.

Found the following on line which might help - if your camper weight is upto 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes) with no more than 8 passenger seats, fingers crossed you will be ok.

Below are the driving licence categories which apply to cars and light vehicles, such as trailers.

B

A Category B licence covers you to drive a motor vehicle up to 3500kg in weight with as many as 8 passenger seats. A trailer weighing up to 750kg may also be added to the vehicle.

Before towing a caravan or trailer for the first time, you can use our towing capacity calculator to check that your vehicle can safely tow the intended load.

B Auto

The Category B Auto licence has the same conditions as a Category A, except you are only able to drive vehicles with automatic transmission. If you wish to drive both manual and automatic vehicles, you must learn to drive and take your practical test using a manual vehicle.

BE

A Category BE (or B+E) licence allows you to drive a Category B vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer which does not meet Category B regulations. The maximum mass of the trailer alone under this category must be no more than 3500kg.

B1

Under a Category B1 licence, you can drive 4-wheeled vehicles with up to 400kg unladen weight (or 550kg for vehicles designed for carrying goods).
