DVLA

Got letter back from DVLA today saying I have to serender my licence and be issued with a 3yr licence dew to my medical condition. Have the DVLA just diagnosed me with MS before my neurologist ? If so that does not seem rite I’m sat here trying to take it all in. i just keep reading the letter again & again

I have received a letter from the DVLA this week after recently notifying them of my diagnosis. They said that they would be contacting my neurologist for further information. No mention of my licence so far.

I had same letter last weekend ! Really shocked by it as my neurologist said it won’t affect my licence. Did you have restrictions too ? I had my c1 and d1 removed which means I can’t drive horse box anymore .

gaz did you tell them you had a possible ms ? I had that label for 10 yrs before I was diagnosed in Dec . I only informed dvla when I had formal diagnosis

Yea c1 d1 removed I told them I had dymilateing diesese the doctor advised my to inform dvla

Obviously I’ve been lucky then gaz as I haven’t declared anything until now … bloody annoyed though … I rang them to say on what basis did they decide I was suddenly a risk. Wouldn’t tell me on the phone but the guy advised I put a letter in requesting to see what evidence they used to make the decision … I have friends who do not have restricted licences and they have more issues than I do … the only thing I can think it could possibly be is my sight as I do have a slight issue with depth vision but so do a lot of people and don’t realise … it just makes me more cautious parking my horse trailer … the cars fine as its automatic and has sensors

Does anyone no if ms will be mentioned on my new 3yr license

Your 3 year licence will look exactly like your current licence except for the “valid until” date being a little bit sooner. Some people have found that previous vehicle categories they had are removed (particularly when they have held a licence for years - everybody used to get a lot of categories like towing and larger vans automatically that now require formal testing) but there isn’t anything on the licence to show you are medically restricted or what your medical problem is.

Although there is nothing written on your physical licence, if your licence is checked by Police on their computer it does record that there has been a restriction to your licence but even that doesn’t show why. The only people who would know are the DVLA medical branch who have secure access to that part of your driving record.

And Dr Geoff will tell you, his licence still allows him to drive a tank. It’s just a pity that he couldn’t climb into one these days!

Boblatina are you aware of anyone who has a restricted licence and retained all their categories … whilst I was accepting more I think about it I am really annoyed they have taken my C1 without having good reason as I can’t drive the horse box or motor home without it … whilst it was only a couple of times a year it was still important to me

Is the motor home more less than 3500 Weight if so you should still be able to drive it

Not sure gaz but I expect possibly not as its 6 berth …the horse box is definately well over !

Just received my letter from dvla re reducing licence to 3 year and letter says I will loose c1 and d1 entitlement, but it also says if I complete a d4 medical report and an application I can get them back. I’ve asked for the forms from the dvla and will try to get the c1 back. About being able to drive our camper van can’t expect my husband to do all the driving when we go away!

Have you got optic damage I have so is that hat why I didn’t get offered the d4 form?

No optic damage balance and numbness mainly. Thought I’d give it a go nothing to lose!

And, as usual, Boblatina is right about the tank.

Just remember that the DVLA is a bureaucracy. By the book, every time!
I was already on a 3-year licence on account of my age.
So they took this away and gave me a nice new 3-year one on account of my MS
I declared my Diplopia (double vision) this time and got more forms to fill in, and had to send my licence back (and by this time it had already expired), so now I wait, and wait, and …

The funniest bit was the letter that said:
“We have received information that you need to drive a vehicle with adapted controls …”
Yes they had the information - I sent it to them!
Adapted controls? Yes, I drive an automatic car. I have driven auto-transmission cars from choice for over 15 years straight.
In the US, auto is the norm, stick-shift is the odd-ball, but to the DVLA …

But I am still driving on the piece of DVLA papar that says I can
