major bowel problems please help at end if my tether

Hi i have major bowel probs…im on 120ml of lactulose now and still pass so little…in pain all the time and constant urge to poop but cant…i was approved for peristeen then continence nurse changed her mind…thanks nurse…i do my own enemas but i retain the water and they dont help like they used to…its ruining my life ive tried movicol laxido did nothing…now on 120mk of lactulose…what do you use ? the pain keeps me awake and j get impacted…had enough i can cope with legs not working etc.

Hi anon Before I started on Rebif and indeed pre diagnosis i always had major issues with constipation and impaction. I used to use lactulose and senokot when it hit and then someone recommended fybogel which is a sachet dissolved in water to make an orange flavour drink. I had one every day, regardless of whether I was in need or not and found that, very quickly, I was rarely constipated. The trick was not to wait for constipation hit before taking it but just to have one or sometimes two every day without fail. Hope this helps. Xx

I agree with Catherine - if I take Movicol daily, then I only have a problem for a couple of days a month. Don’t wait for it to happen but take it frequently. I have to be careful though as Movicol can work too well on me! Teresa xx

hello hun.

I also suffer with constipation…then I up the laxido and senna and I get too loose. But it can takes a few days before i go.

I have started having small enemas given by district nurses. I am unable to push stools out, or hold suppositories in.

Most of the time i follow a healthy high fibre diet…i do drink a lot of water, but am told to drink more. Then I need to wee too often, and like you, my legs dont work, so getting to the loo quickly is a problem.

Problems with bladder and bowels mars my life…a lot. I often have to cancel outings and this gets me rally down. I often go to bed, as sitting in my wheelchair all day, makes me uncomfortable, when my bowels are bunged up.

So how can I help you?

Severe impaction shouldnt be ignored by doctors. Why did the continence nurse change her mind about the peristeen? maybe you need a colonoscopy to see what is going on. Is your GP good? ask him/her for a referral to a hospital.

I had 2 small enemas last week…but all the small ones do is release the stools close to the anus. The 2nd one caused a lot of pain. But i`ve got going again now with laxidos.

A tip…I have found that bananas bung me up…i thought they were a good source of fibre and was eating up to 3 a day. I read that in people who arent active, bananas sit and clog us up. That was news to me!

I wish I could help you more. I know how awful it is.

Money with the peristeen i think she tried to say was because i had hemmoroids but knew this and said no probs initially then changed her mind…i am seeing my gp wednesday…movicol doesnt work at all and makes my bladder worse…enemas sadly also make me wee non stop…seriously i dream about a colostomy…i also get incontinence issues so looking fir something long term…tried fybogel bunged me up…prob j havd its soft sorry tmi but i cant get it out…slowly losing all feeling below my pubic bone but not the intense feeling i need to poop all the time plus bloating etc…hate ms put up with it for years but fed up now

Oh poor you…dunno what else to suggest.

let us know what doc says, yeh?

I use Macrogol daily but I think it’s quite like Fybogel. Have you tried linseed (drink lots of water with the seeds) or syrup of figs? If you Google it, there are 2 types of fibre (soluble and insoluble I think) and one - sorry not sure which - can actually make the problem worse. I hate constipation and feeling not able to empty bowels fully. I am avoiding dairy now and have just bought some Aloe Vera Colon Cleanse to try. I’ll let you know. Hope this helps. Ann

Hi annelda is that aloe vera colon clranse in tablet form from holland and barrat?..i have some just scared to try it so please let me know x

Oooooh, yes, Pat. My hubby swears by prunes. Xx

Are y ou drinking enough water? Caffinated drinks don’t count anymore. So tea/coffee coke etc doesn’t count as caffine is a bladder irritant. With the laxido, movicol you need to up your fluid intake. If none of this works you need to see a dr who specialises in these matters. If the bowel isn’t being stimmulated by these things than the muscles in the bowel might not be working as well as they should but it needs investigation properly. So my love it might be time to be refered but most people find that increasing fluids, having dried fruits prunes, apricots etc and taking the movicol works. Also make sure that you are able to sit long enough on the loo. enemas will only really work if there is poo in the rectum . I suffer as well so I feel your pain… Not an easy thing to talk about but really important.Good luck and bombs away
