Hi im will, im new to the forum and no idea if ill get this right lol… To begin with, my partner was diagnosed with ms back in 2010 at this point in time she has lost the use of both legs and in a wheelchair or mostly stuck in bed because of the house we are in… Step in to the house step down for living room another step down the kitchen and bathroom.
Basically weve been on the housing register for the last 4 years with no properties coming up that suit our needs, we are desperate to get into a wheelchair accessible bungalow for her own sanity. Weve pondered with going private rented but the prices are so high im not sure if its even an option…
If anyone has any ideas or could help point me in the right direction i/we would be incredibly grateful
if your in the UK do you come under HOMESEEKERS? We have BANDS
bronze
silver
gold
to move urgently you need to be on GOLD although i have moved on silver.
You need to get your GP, adult social services to refer to OT as well. .Occupational therapist will assess your safety needs for your husband and do a risk assessment.
they can then send request to council to have your band upgraded. You can also get your husbands MS nurse to do the same as well or his neurologist.
I went the MS nurse and she wrote to the council a brilliant letter and i went from bronze to silver and i got my bungalow with much better space for my wheelchair etc.
THATS how i did it.
Hi Crazy Chick has offered great advice. Hope it works for you.
Must be a nightmare for you.
I have also looked at private bungalows for rent…astronomical prices!

Worth talking to either housing dept and/or OT (occupational therapy) within Adult Social Care Dept. These may be in a unitary authority or separate authorities (e.g. district & county council) where you live.
It’s all about waiting lists these days, due to Covid as much as anything. By involving the OT’s and getting an assessment, they may then put pressure on housing on your behalf if they regard present accommodation as unsuitable. Look on your local council website for getting an assessment or fill out a self assessment form.
If you’re lucky, your authority may be using something like Living Made Easy. By a charity called DLF, I’ve become a fan! They have a product called AskSARA which is a self-assessment version of what an OT would ask if they came out to see you. It can recommend products and if your Authority is using it, can send a copy of your report directly to the OT’s. Sometimes a recommendation can just be for handy lifestyle products but can be for more radical review of property adaptations or suitability.
Even if your local authority doesn’t have a registration to AskSARA, it can still produce a report for your own use and browsing through the products can be really useful. Being a charity, product recommendations are guided and impartial rather than using something random like Google or Amazon.
Just had another thought…ask to speak to your Community Matron. These bods can move mountains, as they did for me once. They are based at your GP surgery or close by.
Their task is to help those with long term chronic conditions.
