What's your living situation?

Hi all I’m currently waiting for a wheelchair accessible home. I’ve been on the council list for almost 2 years and nothing has come up. I’ve just turned SPMS and I need to be in my wheelchair. I’m in a bungalow but it’s too small for a chair. So, what’s your living situation? Is it suitable for your needs? Hope did you come about it? Share your stories! Thanks all

Hi tingly

When I first needed a wheelchair accessible home, I was put on the council waiting list. They offered me one, but it wasn’t actually that great for a chair. So I decided to risk privately renting a little ground floor 1 bed flat in a new block of flats. It was great for the chair and I loved the flat. After a few years I got married, started working again, and we moved to a much larger 2 bed 3rd floor flat, which was on a try-before-you-buy deal - rent for a year, then the rent you paid can go towards the deposit to buy it. Again, because it’s newly built, it’s great for the chair (as long as the lift doesn’t break!)

when hubby died i struggled to sell house not quite true i sold it within 24 hours but twice the chain collapse once the day before exchange. I could no longer live there it was too large for me, so was put on priority houseing list council. I was offered a down stairs flat in sheltered and took it moved in.

sadly the death of hubby saw my illness rapidly decline and i needed more aids. my little flat wasnt big enough. my MS nurse GOT involved and recomended i was moved. AGAIN. I did i ended up in sheltered again but in a bungalo which has lots of space and room for my wheelchair if i should need it.

You have to get help this is the thing. ask your MS nurse to write a letter to the council explaining why you need to be on prioritiy list. it worked for me.

I’m in the highest band I can be I’ve done all the medical evidence etc there just isn’t the housing stock

in gloucestershire we have a bidding system. do you have that tingly? I had to keep bidding and within 2 weeks i got a lovely place. x

Hi, we have adapted our bungalow to suit…it has taken a heck of a lot of money…some help from council.

We put in a wet room about 8 years ago…sacrificed a bedroom to do so, but the existing bathroom was too small to get my commode in. An OT advised us on it and fast tracked us…but a year later, I was number 168 on the list…so we got a bank loan…still paying it off…cost 9k!!!

Other stuff we have done;

built and re-built an access deck

widened pr removed internal doorways

opened up hallway

replaced flooring

Its chuff expensive to be diabled, innit!!

ps what’s the deal with private landlords…do they have make a place accessible?

At the moment, I’m in a mid terraced house two storey, with a mortgage. 3 steps down from the street (The previous owners converted the sloping front garden, into a raised driveway). At the moment I don’t have any issues with stairs, but depending on my eventual diagnosis / progression of symptoms it may be an issue.

In the immediate future though, it’s looking like I’m getting Ill Health Retirement from work, so I’ll certainly need to watch the pennies!

Crazy Chick I am so sorry about your loss god bless you so much

thank you its been very hard. xxxx

I live on the 8th floor of a 10 story block of flats. Have a lift I use a chair too. Fortunately

i have a partner who can help me when needed. I’m able to navigate around our flat

plus I have magnificent views. So cannot complain.
