Council housing

Right, where to start?

I’ve SPMS, diagnosed 20 years ago. I’m currently employed full time, on a ‘middling’ salary. I’ve also recently separated from my wife. I also was hospitalised with a relapse in the summer, the hospital discharge team assessed my rental accommodation as unsuitable as I’m full time wheelchair user. I was then put up in a hotel as temporary placement until interim residence found by the local authority (Hackney). I’m now in a hostel, awaiting decision on whether Hackney can provide a full duty of care. If so, I’ll be able to join the register for social housing and bid for properties, or so I gather. This all has been a nightmare and incredibly dispiriting. I’m technically homeless. Does anyone have any advice on how to engage with the local authority so I can get housed appropriately? I’ve been looking in the private sector for rentals, but there’s very, very little out there for wheelchair users.

Thanks for anything you may be able to throw my way.

Oh dear, what a dilemma for you.

As a fellow long term MSer, and a full time wheelchair user…I get you totally.

I expect your housing check list will read as follows;

ground floor or with reliable lift

wet room

widened doors

easy access grounds

hoist (if you use them…I do)

Having all this you should be top of the list for a suitable property. But those properties are probably few and far between.

Arent private landlords obliged to make the necessary alterations?

Are you prepared to move districts?

Wishing you a speedy result.

Hi sorry you are in this situation.I would email or ring your local MP and tell him about your situation and ask if they can help you, they should do as that’s there job.You can google who they are and it will give you a contact address. We did this for my daughter who has a disabled child and they did help quite a lot,Hope this helps and good luck.

Can they not adapt the house you were in? Or are external stairs the issue? If your registered social landlord says its unsuitable they surely are responsible to have you as a high priority. Private sector wont usually allow adaptations. Not sure if there are disability providers with housing stock? Or do you have a centre fir inclusive living/ specialist organisation who can help?

I’m with Jaydee get in touch with your MP, perhaps contact your Mayor as well.

Good luck
