Hi. I was diagnosed since 2008 and have been lucky in that most of my symptoms are better now than at diagnosis. One exception is my eyesight, which can make reading and typing difficult. I read and write for a living so a larger screen would be very helpful and would enable me to keep working, but fatigue and depression limit my income so that seems increasingly unaffordable… Are there any funds or charities that might assist me with this purchase?
Hi
What about asking the ms society for a grant? Hope someone can help, fingers crossed.

Hello,
While you are waiting why not try the Ease of Access section of the Control Panel?
You change or adjust the size of text or introduce a virtual magnifying glass.
Anthony
Thanks, Pam. I’ll try
Appreciate your help, Anthony. I read, write and edit images for a living so that’s not a solution for me but thanks anyway!
Are you employed or self-employed? A larger screen might count as a reasonable adjustment and should/could be provided by your employer (who might get help through Acccess to Work if small business or very expensive kit).
If you are self employed you might need to bigyt the bullet and buy a new monitor. They are much cheaper these days - thank goodness.
Self employed sadly… But you’re right it’s a reasonable adjustment. Thanks!
Just need to ask …how do you access & cope with this forum ??
Dom
What size/type of screen do you currently use. If you are trying to work from a laptop - even with a good size screen - you will have problems. A separate monitor attached to your com0uter will work far better for you IMHO.
There are a few cheap and easy adjustments you can make as well. Is the background light in your workspace sufficient? I have eyesight issues from MS including colour blindness and I find low light levels difficult if not impossible to work in - and new low engery bulbs make it worse!!! I now use high power DAYLIGHT FREQUENCY bulbs where I work. They are brilliant for me but they are very bright which means that my husband finds it very uncomfortable to be in the room with me!
Also, have you thought of adjusting your document backgrounds for maximum contrast? The best document layout for people with sight issues is BLACK type on a YELLOW background. Have a look on the RNIB site for information. There are very good programmes available for changing your screen image but, IMHO, other than changing your screen background to a better colour contrast (ie less blue!!!) the accesibilty features on Windows is pretty poor.
Even viewing your documents at a higher magnification can help. I always view and prep documents at about 170%. 100% is very difficult for me even with computer glasses.
The font you use is also important. Anything with serifs (like Times New Roman) can be more difficult to read because it is less clearly defined. I produce all my documents in Ariel - when I was working, I managed to persuade my department to change their house style for documents.
I am sure that you are doing most of these things already but I thought they would be useful because a lot of people here have permanent/temporary vision problems. Even this forum can be accessed in a more easily viewed mode - just change your account preferences.
No prob most days - my optic neuritis is intermittent – a larger screen would just help me work on a daily basis.
15" Macbook Pro, which is fine most of the time but not all of the time. An external monitor would help me continue to work when the troubles kick in…
Good point, Boblatina. Thanks!
Good point, Boblatina. Thanks!
It’s not quite that simple because I do more than use the internet or Word… I can’t adjust the colour to use Photoshop, InDesign or content management systems. I use a Mac so I’m not subject to vagaries of Windows, but Apple has its own issues…
I want to be able to zoom in to make reading easier but still see the whole window I’m working in, as well as ideally see the other documents I have open. Demanding I know but you can see why I think a larger screen would be helpful. Guess I’ll have to save up!
