Hi all Some of you may remember I had a bladder stone removed quite recently. I ended up back in hospital for 2 days as I was bleeding quite heavily. Consultant said could have been due to me having to self catheterise so wanted indwelling catheter fit for 2 weeks to give my bladder a rest. It has been like having a holiday from the traumas self catheterising myself, being so immobile etc. the continence nurse suggested keeping it in permanently. Unfortunately my consultant although has no issues with a permanent catheter wants it to be a suprapubic one!! My continence nurse is very much against suprapubic as she says 4 out of 5 of her patients leak from their urethra at the same time!! The consultant says the procedure is reversable continence says not!! I am left a little confused so would be grateful to hear of any of your stories on either types of catheter. Thanking you in anticipation… Linda x
My experience is with a lady in my old home not personal.
Yes she did leak occasionally despite her suprapubic, but this was usually when she needed her catheter changing.
The suprapubic gave her a much better quality of life, and more importantly no infections.
The changing of it was also far less traumatic for her aswell.
We were always told that if it came out we had half an hour before the hole closed up,and to call district nurse or take her to A&E immediately.
I was called into work at 6am Christmas day as it had come out…oh joy!!! I couldn’t get anyone to come out to her and was advised A&E was full of heart attacks and she woildn’t be classed as an emergency.
When the day shift of district nurses came on they came straight out and said they would have one go at re inserting, but didn’t hold out much hope.It went in no trouble despite being out for several hours.
She did say that that was the exception not the rule. They were expecting her to have to go back and have the initial procedure redone.
My personal view is if I had to have one I would go suprapubic.

Hi Linda, Although I don’t have any info on this, the best person to ask is Frances (Campion) who usually posts on Everyday Living. Teresa xx
Thanks Pip and Teresa for replying. Linda x
