Having Suprapubic Catheter-Nervous

hi everyone, hope you are all doing as best as you can.

I attended my Urology Appt last week and we decided that it was best for me to be fitted with a Suprapubic Catheter as self catheterising isn’t working that well after 5 years of self catheterising successfully.

After chatting with Urologist we decided that a local anaesthetic would be good for me.

I’m feeling really nervous about it. I know once it is done my quality of life will be better as I’m a prisoner to the loo at the moment. My bladder can empty anywhere. Really embarrassing.

I’d really like to hear from anyone who has had this done by local for any advice or tips.

Thanks so much for any help with a bit of reassurance.

Hi, I had mine done about 3 years ago & for me it’s the best thing ever

I was done under general anaesthetic which just meant an overnight stay…maybe it depends on whoever does it whether it’s local or general? If I had known, I’d have been happy to have a local too.

They’re not infallible, sometimes an accident might happen, but for me, thankfully not often!

It’s given me so much more freedom & no more infections!

Hi Happiness The best thing ever is my way of describing my Supra Pubic. I have had it two and a half years and having gone from countless hospital trips via Ambulance and countless infections to almost perfection I wont be shifted fro that description. I would recomend it to anyone. Don

Hi I have had 2 S/P’s the surgery was fine and done as a day case, it really makes life a lot easier.

I do hope you get a lot of benefit from it, I am sure you are nervous I was!!

You will be fine both of mine were done under G/A so will probably be a short anaesthetic.

Best wishes

Hi, spcs are the best thing since sliced bread!!!

Had mine 2.5 years and although it isnt without the occassional problem, it is soooooooo much better than wetting myself, needing to go every hour, falling onto loos and actually breaking them, or needing to ask for someone to help pick me up in pub toilets because my legs collapsed!

Things that can be a nuisance are always fixable, but dont worry about them now…concentrate on getting used to your new friend and saviour!!!

Can’t add much more - had mine done about 20yrs ago - so quite an old hand now. lt is an easy procedure so you will be fine with local - or just very light general anaesthetic.

We can help with ‘tips’ and advice when you have had yours done -

All the best.

Thanks so much Poll and SJ. I have to wait for my appt to come through. Apparently the waiting list for local is much shorter than the general waiting list. Think that’s why he advised to have it done that way.

I really appreciate your help and I’ll let you know when the appt comes through.
