How much vitamin D3

Hi everyone

I know this question has been asked before but can anyone tell me please how much vitamin D3 should we take per day. I bought a bottle of capsules a couple of months ago when I didn’t think there was gonna be any sunshine this year and am wondering how I know the bottle contains the D3 when I bought from the internet?

I am tempted to purchase from Holland and Barrett but they recommend 10 drops of their oil per day and this is only(1,000 I/U. 25UG).

The capules that I have bought online contain 5000 I/U.

I am also advising my daughter who does not have MS but is keen to help her vitamin D levels as she didn’t get very much sunshine this year.

Thank you once again. I will definietly keep this information on a document this time!

You obviously have a forward thinking consultant, thank you for your reply.

The best thing is to get a blood test. If your D3 level is below 150nmol/l, then increase your D3 intake. Wait a month and get another test. Then repeat as necessary. (Make sure to look only at the D3 number; D2 isn’t important.)

1,200iu a day took me to 86 nmol/l. 5,800iu a day took me to 126nmol/l. So I now alternate 5,000iu a day with 10,000iu a day (and have given up the blood tests!).

If you want to skip all the blood tests, I think the most commonly recommended dose for adults is 5,000iu a day.

When i last had a blood test my level was 140nmol/l. Not bad really (should be 150) but i decided to take 5000iu anyway.

I will ask next time i have blood test to see if my level has changed.

I buy ‘healthy origins’ d3 from amazon as it is reasonably priced. Who knows if its helping but i like to think it is.

After years of telling me that there was no case for taking D3, my MS Nurse sprung it on me last week that I should be taking 1,000IU D3 a day and that “some people take more”. Apparently, they’ve now started following the advice of organizations like the MS Society.

In the past I’ve had reactions taking supplements, but I’ve now found that I’m OK taking 1,000IU D3 with my evening meal, so I’ll build it up from there and see how I go.

Check the NICE Guidelines. I seemed to have read somewhere about aiming for 15,000 units a day?

I take 5,000iu a day. The neurologist said that was an ok level.

I have read it is hard to overdo the D3 level, so I imagine 10,000iu wouldn’t do any harm either. I might move up to that next time I buy some.

Hi Teresa, are the Healthy Origins capsules very big? I have a problem with swallowing big capsues and wonder if the liquid drops are a better choice?

Thanks,

Pat - The Healthy Origins vit d3 come in ‘softgels’ - they are quite small rugby ball shape - and you can get 10.000ius as well as 5.000ius. 360 gels. l find them easy to swallow - They can be split and squeezed into a drink of ie orange juice. My daughter prefers the little micro tablets - these are from vitamind3world.com - they are miniscule. l do take a lot of supplements - mainly to help my osteo-arthritis - and sometimes l feel l cannot swallow another one!!!

l took 20.000ius for nearly 2 years - now take 10.000 but still have not reached the target - which makes me think us pwms - just cannot get enough vitd3. l do have a friend who has been on 60.000ius daily - after going to US for a life saving op for cancer.

He was told it was inoperable in UK - and now 8yrs later he has a ‘all-clear’ - but the oncologist has told him to stick with the D3 for life.

lt is possible to have a ‘pin-prick’ test done -postal - lt is a nhs lab in Birmingham. Just google vitamin d3 test Birmingham. and you wll find it. They will post the test kit to you. Well worth it.

They’re very easy to swallow Pat: smaller than a paracetamol caplet.
