hoist update

hi Gang!

Maybe some of you recall the trouble I had with my ceiling hoist…?

Well incase not, heres a quick rundown of whats gone on.

In 2011 we had a floor hoist deliverd, as my transfers were so bad and difficult for me and my carers.

Well what a monster that turned out to be. It took up so much floor space that hubby had to move into the spare bedroom. Then it was so heavy to move on carpet. Even my strong hubby found it hard to work.

A while after it went back to stores, we had a ceiling hoist installed. there was a rail in the lounge and another in the bedroom. No floor space needed, so hubby moved back in with me. All was well and i had a fab time spinning around in mid air!

10 months later, we noticed the lifting tape was fraying. Within 5 days it looked like a rat had been at it!

A new unit was brought in. we were told to watch for fraying signs before it got so bad, if it happened again.

Within 2 months, we saw fraying again. i called the OT who initially organised the hoist. She was aghast to see/hear what had happened and got the firm back to discuss the problems.

yesterday a chap from Housing Adaptations arrived and told us the hoist firm was crediting them a full refund. This feller told us there have been umpteen problems with this type of hoist (Freeway P-200) and there was a significant design flaw. Yeh, I know!

So now I have been told a different type of hoist will be installed…a fixed unit in each room. This will be easier than having to shift the hoist from room to room.

I`ve been told i wont be means trested again, but I hope that doesnt happen…stress I dont need!

So, let`s see what occurs, eh?

It is an ongoing saga with the hoist isn’t it Poll? Let’s hope this is the last type you’ll need for a long time to come and that it works a treat! Hopefully your funding situation will stay the same and they won’t means test you. Fingers crossed! Teresa xx

Hi, well that all sounds ok, as you say hopefully they won’t means test you again, and hopefully you get the new hoist very soon. Cheryl:-)

Hi Poll

It will be good to get your hoist situation sorted and having each room should really help you and Graham.

I finally got the go ahead for my new wheelchair after going through numerous hoops and it taking over 16 months - it should be with me by the end of January (fingers crossed). The Access to Work lady was splendid especially after my present wheelchair broke down and I couldn’t get to work and so became housebound (I’ve got a temporary fix on it now and am hoping it will last until my new one arrives). Hence the e-cards for Christmas as I wasn’t able to get out to the shops and it was no good asking OH as he has no idea - bless.

Hope all is well with you and that we can meet up again once we both get sorted - what a life.

Love, Mary xxx

Thankyou for your reply Mary.

Oh Poll, I do hope you get the hoist sorted out more successfully this time…what a carry on eh?? Happy new year to you and hubby! Luv Linda x

Thanks all for your replies.

Yesterday I got a standard letter, telling me that I should apply for a means testing form and send it back.

i didnt feel that was right after what the chap said on Thursday. So I rang him and told him I had got the letter. He said not to wrorry about it and then spoke to a woman who deals with means testing. i could hear how the conversation went.

The woman agreed that I should not be means tested again, as i`d got an inferior product, which was replaced and the same problem was happening again.

This chap said he would speak to the boss about it, when he is back at work on 14th. it will be up to him…keep all your fingers and toes crossed for me, if you can, eh?
