Did anyone else see the fab thunder and lightning last night. It was brilliant. We had a quick burst about 4 yesterday afternoon, then more about 10pm then fabulous crackling and lights about 1 in the morning. The it chucked it down with river running down street, absolutely brilliant. All calm now…
Having said that, just looked on local news and some poor souls have had roofs struck by lightning, and some damage…oh dear
was really neat, but the dog was freaked right out
Wow, no, what part of the country are you in?
OMG, I’ve just checked the BBC weather website, because my mum said earlier in the week that thunderstorms were threatened for this afternoon around here, and look at the wonderful typo xD
lol oops
im in the Angus area in Scotland, and the photos I’ve seen from around here and Dundee are really cool
Mmmmmmmm, warm treacle tart and raspberry ripple ice cream… hello nurse !
Just saw some video of it on the BBC News website - and the golf-ball-sized hailstones.
It has rained here (Bristol) today, and is a lot more comfortable, but so far no lightning.
I do like a good display, but only as long as I’m not out in it!
Interesting neurological thingy, but not MS-related, but does lightning make you sneeze? It does me! If I get that feeling that I need to sneeze, I can also induce it by looking at a bright light.
Apparently, it’s all to do with our internal neurological wiring, and affects up to 35% of us. People who don’t have it are completely uncomprehending of those that do, and sometimes even think we must be making it up (perhaps it does have something in common with MS after all, really).
Tina
No sneezing. Storm’s supposed to be hitting east anglia later tonight. Heat gives me headaches, can’t wait
Didn’t know that about lightning, another interesting fact learnt from Tina! Yeah I can see the similarity, I wonder what makes so many people disbelieving of something just because a) they can’t see it, or b) it doesn’t happen to them. : /
Has anyone seen fork lightning in this country?
I’ve only seen it in America, was kind of scary to be honest! Was safely indoors in a 12th floor hotel room so an amazing view of it, but it was un-nerving because I’d never seen it before.
If anyone ever offers you a free trip to Florida, run a mile. Seriously, I was there in late May 2008, and the heat/humidity combo was crazy. I have a friend who lives in Alabama, so she’s no stranger to the hot southern climate, and she describes Florida as, “being wrapped in a hot, wet blanket”. That’s spot on, stepping out of the air-conditioned airport into that was a massive shock to the system.
Plus there’s crazy tropical storms pretty much every day in the afternoon. Total monsoon for half an hour, so you can get completely drenched outside while you’re fleeing back indoors, into air-con that’s so cold you’re shivering! I was sick as a dog for 2 weeks after I came back, my body just could not deal with the constant changing between baking hot and humid outside, and fridge-like temps indoors.
Tina - I’m a photosensitive sneezer too! If I feel a tingle, I just look at a bright light and it makes me sneeze. Doesn’t work if I don’t have a sneeze building up though. Thought it was more common than 35% of the population.
We didn’t have the storms last night down on the Hants/Berks border. We had a very brief one Tuesday night instead, about 9:30pm, and only for about half an hour. Couldn’t see any of the lightning strikes but the rumbling of thunder seemed to last forever. I love a good storm.
Hi
I live in County Durham, the donner and blitzen here was ‘fab’ to see/hear although my cat was also freaked out. We also had ‘scary’ hailstones.
xx
Here in Lincs the sky’s turning apocalypse black…it was nice knowing you guys! gulps
You’ve seriously never seen forked lightning in this country? NEVER?
/As incredulous as the people who don’t believe in light-triggered sneezing.
I see it most times there’s a storm - assuming I’m watching, that is.
Looks like Bristol are forecast to get ours tomorrow night/Saturday morning, after another very hot day tomorrow.
Just one day’s respite, then back to being so hot I don’t know where to put myself.
Tina
No, never D: Maybe I have seen it then, but the bit coming down to the ground’s always been hidden by buildings or something?
My mum says she sees it, and she’s just 8 miles or so up the road, but she’s on the edge of a village with views over open fields.
Tina, those nasty temps you’ve got forecast for Friday are gonna be hitting us in the East on Saturday. Next week’s looking far less nasty though, plenty of rain!
Did anyone get big dents in there cars with the storm last night we all did in Yorkshire and glass in greenhouse was smashed. Hubby went for more glass today and it’s all sold. Could be more tonight it was good to watch though
That’s crazy; the kind of mental weather that they have in America and other much larger landmasses. Where’s this stuff come from?
Can we send it back?
Our’s was awesome last night!!! Went black & omg did it give us hell! Brill to watch though (sorry to anyone who experienced damage) I absolutely love a good storm, hubby slept through it, as usual Tracey x
So it was hot as hell yesterday, but we were looking forward to the big storm. About half seven it started getting dark, then a pitter patter on to the cat run… then it stopped. Was that it ??? Yup. As disappointing as the ending of True Blood ! Apparently the storm avoided Norfolk and headed up the north sea… no fair !!!
You scared it away Not a drop of rain at all here, so it either didn’t reach this far inland (25 miles or so), or it shunned Lincolnshire too and heading on up to Yorkshire maybe!
3.20am today. Now that’s what I’m talking about ! Massive clap of thunder after three hour build up. Sheet lightning, water running down road. Proper storm. My eldest and youngest slept through it… middle son scared witless !!
