Driving License Renewal Question

I just checked my driving license expiry date (after having sent it off last year to be MS updated) and just noticed that it expires in 2027.

Does that mean I have to surrender it again to the DVLA and be checked out/approved by my GP/consultant for being safe to drive?

@lajuice2424 I had a letter from DVLA many years ago.. too long ago. It was actually 21 years ago and all it says that I can continue to drive as normal but.. and there’s always a but, if anything changes..ie, my ms then I have to notify DVLA. The onus being on ourselves to let them know if our condition has worsened. I’ve moved several times and I’ve still got the same letter with a long ago address I used to live at  So I don’t presume that you have to tell them anything just because it’s time to renew your licence to drive. Only if your health has worsened, or new symptoms possibly.

Its a 3 year license. Most os us get a short license. Close the the expiry date you’ll get a letter and questionaire to fill out. DVLA will then do their investigation to ensure you’re safe to drive. That includes contacting your Neurologist. After which they’ll determine whether to renew it. They can take while.

Mine Expired in June and they only, last week, delivered my new license. While license expirred in June I was still allowed to drive while they conduct their slow investigation. I got a 5 year license nowadays but early in my MS diagnosis I had 3 year licenses. Either way don’t worry about it. They’ll contact closer to the time and unless you are unfit to drive it’ll get renewed. By unfit I mean consistently unfit to drive. If you’re relapsing at time of renewal that dones’t count as it’ll depend what you are like normally.
