I’ve got a really good wheelchair ramp at the front door and a low threshold door, but my problem is locking the door. I can’t stand to push the handle up, I don’t live alone so it’s not a massive problem, and people are generally kind and helpful if I’m struggling.
Anyway I think I’ve now saved up enough money to get a ramp at the back door, not having been able to use it for about 10 years! I will also have to replace the door with one without the high threshold.
I’m wondering if it would also be possible to get one with a lower handle to make it easier or perhaps a door with keypad.
Anyone any experience please?
Obvious solution would be to get an electric door opener with a remote push-plate, like the ones fitted to commercial buildings
Would I be able to lock it though?
I would.have thought they would.put the handle where you want.it! Obviously they may have to for.other customers with different issues.

Hi Flowerpot
I had the same problem so we paid and had an electric door installed. I have a remote to operate the door and when it shuts it automatically locks at the same time.
Hope this helps

Thanks that sounds like a great idea. If it’s not a rude question how much did it cost?
Not a rude question at all it was £2500 five years ago but it has been a godsend. We live in Gloucestershire and the nearest firm we could find was in Bristol, but I would think more company’s are doing it now.

Thanks Pam. I’ll look into this. This disability malarkey is expensive isn’t it?!

Hello again. It seems I can’t have a ramp at the back door because it will be too steep because of the limited amount of space, so it looks like a new door at the front for my existing ramp. So far as the electric door goes -
- Can it also be locked/unlocked conventionally?
I have a key safe for my carers, although my husband usually unlocks the door before they arrive.
- Is it locked when it’s closed, or can it be left unlocked?

Hi Eve
Yes you can unlock and lock the door normally.
We have a key safe on the outside and your carers would have a coded key fob to open the door.
When the door is closed it automatically locks but someone outside can open it by putting the number in that you have chosen.
If the electric is turned off from the door it would revert to an ordinary door.
Hope this all makes sense.

Thank you. Forgive me for being a bit dim, but my key safe contains a key for the door. Do you have a key safe or is there a key pad to unlock the door?
Eve
Hi Eve
It is a key pad with numbers on so anyone either puts the number in or they have a coded fob to touch the pad with and that opens the doors. Either way work just as easy as the other.
Sorry it sounds really complicated but it definitely isn’t

Thank you Pam. Got it now.
Next comes the search to get the door and someone to fit it!

The company what done mine Eve said they could do it to any door, so if your door is wide enough for your chair you only need the electrics converted.
All the best
