Pat don’t worry about not having carers. You don’t need to have them to claim either of the benefits. I had the highest rate before my surgery for both care and mobility without any carer. I didn’t have any help at all at that stage. I now get higher mobility and lower care. Like you I have someone to help me clean but I haven’t even given them her details as I haven’t claimed since I employed her.

Just take a deep breath and let them know how you are. They take everything into account for PIP so I’d mention this time if you buy frozen veg, ready meals etc, have trouble standing, getting to the loo, need to sit while you get dried or dressed. They even ask how you spend your time, can get to the chemist, shop etc, so go through your week making notes on things you do differently to someone who isn’t disabled.

Please don’t stress, take your time and do one or two questions a day and not even in the order they’re asked. One thing they do give big points for is continence and managing to maintain your dignity with this so mention any problems if you have any in this regard.

Good luck. I’ve got guides to help you claim if you want them e mailing to you.

Cath thank you so much. There’s very good advice there that I shall follow, and you’ve put my mind at rest about not having carers.

Many thanks,

Well here’s on example I can give them under the ‘cooking’ section…

Had a fish pie in the oven. Timed it ok for the 45 minutes. Cooked frozen peas. Went to get the pie out of the oven… no pie!!!

I’d forgotten to put it in.

Oh Pat that sounds like stupid things I do! I put baby potatoes in microwave to bake, got them out handling like hot, served up then was informed by my guest they were still raw, I hadn’t turned micro on!!! One silly bugger had eaten one as he didn’t want to hurt my feelings.

Thanks Pat and Cath, your antics have put a smile on my face, especially the person who ate the raw potato lol

Keep smiling girls

Pat, I’m so sorry that horrible form has got to you… those forms have the same effect on me, Iv’e had to do them for years for the autistic members of the household, and that’s hard enough, but when i came to doing one for me, it was awful, the questions they ask are ridiculous and repetitive i don’t remember questions asking for names and addresses but in the end i got help to fill it in …Lee and I have battled for years filling these forms for the autistic family members and cognitively its now beyond me. Have you got a disability support service, their job is to support you and help you fill in forms, They know how to word things and what answers they want. I am always honest, but sometimes we pay down our difficulties or forget how it impacts on us. The good thing was that the lady helping me, wrote in the forms, and just asked me the questions…It was quite quick to get the decision, a couple of weeks later i had an interview and the lady interviewing had been an ms nurse and a cancer nurse and knew I was genuine. Pat the fact that you haven’t got a carer shouldn’t make a difference.

Like you I deal with my own personal care, when was really ill Lee would help me , as much as i love my carers i would have to be in a very bad way. My carers are paid out of my 12 hours a week direct payments, its different to pips or dla, its a fund that is paid into a bank account for your care. you have to be assessed for it,. … it can seem daunting at first finding your own carers but once you have it up and running it is good. I was told that i could use my direct payments for cleaning or cooking, whatever would help me, or even help accessing social activities and really just to carry on being a mum. Pat its well worth asking about.

I hope it might help.

Thank Michelle. All good info. Poor you having to fill in these forms for years!

I’m ok right now without care and of course because I live in sheltered housing I could get a care package… but I want to go as long as I can without. I have all my housework done, send my laundry out, buy in frozen meals and wear an emergency pendant.

So of course DLA is important to me as all the above costs money (except the pendant). I also have to get taxi’s when I go out as I can’t get on public transport.

I’m hoping all of that will make my point.

Last time I got middle care and high mobility and I’m hoping for the same again.

I’ve nearly finished it. I’m exhausted but at least I’m almost there. Another few hours will do it.

Thanks so much for your reply.

Thanks Nina. I’m having a rest today as am going to Southend-on-sea for the day tomorrow. Trip with my sheltered scheme.

So the form will have to wait but I’m nearly finished anyway.

No tears today!!!

Hi Pat,

Please don’t stress about the forms. I made a right hash of mine. My own fault never opened the form when it came in. I didn’t realise there was a deadline. When I opened it I only had a week to send it back and it was a bank holiday weekend. Speak of panic. I managed to fill it in that day and I had brain fog. I was totally exhausted. I don’t have a carer unless you count my husband who helps me in and out the shower and drives me everywhere. He also hoovers and hangs out the washing and goes to the supermarket for the click and collect. I can hang out the washing with the rollator but he just does it. Poor man he really does deserve a medal. He also has a full time job.

I also still work part time but its getting harder and harder. I am stubborn but now I have PIP I am seriously considering stopping. Apart from earning money the only reason I work is for meeting people. Because of my ms my husband starts his work at 10.00 so he can take me to work, but he doesn’t get hone till 7.30pm. It can get quite lonely the days I don’t work.

Hi Pat,

I spoke too soon. I have just this morning received PIP forms with the heading looking at your PIP again.

Phoned them and the lady I got didn’t know what it was about and said they would phone me back in about 5 days.

Looks like I’m having to go through the whole thing again and I don’t know why. I’m spitting feathers.

OH NO Mags!!!

Surely a mistake!!! I certainly hope so!!!

Fingers and toes crossed for you!
