I have a stinking cold at the moment but because I take Amitriptyline I can’t take the usual suspects such as Sudafed (not that I ever buy a branded one, supermarkets own much cheaper and exactly the same!)
Can anyone recommend a product which dosn’t involve a spray or the Phenylephrine?
Alas I can’t answer your question, but I’d ask a pharmacist if I were you. When I’ve had queries before they’ve always been very helpful, and usually know what the active ingredients are in the products & have recommended me products based on that. Something I do when I’m bunged up is get some vaporub (or the supermarket equivalent) and rub sme on the chest & throat whe I go to bed, but also to rub some on a tissue and stuff them in my pillow. That tends to help me breather a bit easier.
sorry, i don’t know anything either, i have the same problem as you, but i’m on so many tablets at this point, i rattle as i bounce of all the furniture. i find a teaspoon of vicks vaporub in boiling water helps a bit, i’m alergic to it on my skin. hope you find a solution soon.
I used to rely on decongestants every time I caught a cold as I have perennial rhinitis so my nose is permanently blocked or runny anyway. Add a cold to the mix and it isn’t pretty! Trying to inhale my usual steroid nasal spray each morning is a big ask at the moment …
Now I have to inhale menthol products in hot water (I have a plastic mug with a nose shaped attachment on the lid which helps me do that safely) and eat lots of sweets which isn’t very good for my teeth but gets me through the working day. I have perused every packet of decongestants and have yet to find one that I can take with amitriptyline. I use vapour rub on my chest at night and wake in the small hours when it has worn off so have to re-apply. The best sweets are Jakemans without a doubt.
I have a cough worthy of a 60 a day smoker at the moment. And why, oh why, does a rotten cold always go to my legs?!
Here’s to us Ruth - let’s hope we both feel better soon. <>
I have just got over a stinker. I used the Vick Plug in and it really clears your nose very fast. You just plug it in and straight away the stuffiness clears.
Thanks everyone I’ll continue with the Vicks although will definitely try the plug in. Last time I had a cold I ended up being on antibiotics for nearly 5 weeks with a really bad sinus infection. I was told by the gp nurse to do steam inhalations then but when it was 30 degrees outside thought probably best not to otherwise I would have passed out.
It’s quite hard to get hold of. They do them at Amazon or Lloyds Pharmacy. Apparently a lot of people use them even if they don’t have a cold to help them sleep with a nice clear head.
I was full of cold and as soon as I plugged it in my nose was completely clear.
Vic plug in sounds really interesting. Just emailed my daughter about this as one of her sons has Asthma and I am going to try on my husband as he snores like a trouper. thanks for sharing this tip xx
I heard (from several sources) that if you put Vick on your feet when you go to bed, it helps with congestion. No idea if it works, but please let us know if you try it.
