Core exercises

I want to be able to do some exercise to strengthen my core muscles. I have had some advice from a physiotherapist so know what I need and want to do but, I have to lie flat do do some of the exercises. My problem is I have difficulty getting up from the floor again and my bed’s too soft to use so I need some advice about how to overcome this problem. Any advice would be welcomed, thank you.

Shared your problem - ask for sitting advice, yoga techniques. There are some on utube but the good advantage you have with a physio is they would have received a referral from your GP (UK) and so aware of other health restrictions

You should be able to manage the more basic core exercises, from the safety of lying in bed. Not ideal, I agree, but they still do the job.

There are lots of seated yoga/pilates exercises on YouTube that are designed for core strength. The MS Society have some on there so they are MS friendly. Good luck!

Hi I have recently had the same problem. My own mattress is just too soft but I am using a bed in the spare room. This is not ideal but I have a thick exercise mat which I lay on top of the mattress for more stability. I also bought a bed lever to help me get on and off the bed as I have such a weak right side.

I used to do many core exercises when lying on the bed until my partner bought a new mattress - he bought one that wasn’t hard because I have pain in my hips thinking he was doing the right thing. I have bursitis in one of my hips and whether I lie on hard or softer surfaces doesn’t matter as I get pain lying on either but, he didn’t ask or discuss it with me before buying. I prefer a hard mattress as I exercised on it and it’s easier to exercise on than on a soft one. I was taught which core exercises to do by a physiotherapist in a hospital local to me a few years ago but thank you for the ms trust exercises.

Thank you, uTube can be very useful.

Thank you, I’ll check out uTube.

An exercise mat on top of the mattress might just be what I need thank you for giving me the idea.

Gosh it does get complicated with this MS lark, doesn’t it. Try this seated exercise from my rehabilitation gym and hopefully, it will get you started.

I hope you find a workable solution.

Thank you for that, I hope I find a workable solution too.
