changing car - car tax

Hi everyone, hope someone can help.

Selling our car privately (disabled tax till end of October) as looking for a new one. Does anyone know what i do about this tax on it now as whoever buys it will have to tax it themselves. Not got a new car yet as really need to sell this one to be able to afford a new one but when i get one i assume it will come with some tax so how do i change that over to the disabled tax? Thank you in advance

Lisa

Whenever I sold a car privately in the past, I never included the Tax Disc, and no buyer ever expected tax to be included unless I specifically said it would be included. Nearly always applied for a tax refund.

Are you not able to get a tax refund - or include the tax when selling the vehicle and put the price up accordingly ?

Hi Lisa - take your current tax disc off and ring dwp, they will re-issue you a letter to get the tax for your new car. I think they told me to just destroy the old tax disc…

Ok, thank you Hayley will do.

make sure you list the car for sale with no tax though, there is nothing more disappointing than travelling to view a car then to find out you can’t drive it away! It may be a better investment to tax it for 6 months tax, you can put the cost on to the sale price and it will attract more buyers (I never buy a second hand car without at least 2 months tax).
