Can I drive immediately after diagnosis?

Hi all, Per my previous thread, I was diagnosed with RRMS on Thursday. I know that I have to notify the DVLA and I’ve seen many threads about this. However, I’ve not seen anything to suggest whether I can drive prior to them being notified. Do I just have to stop driving until they have confirmed I’m allowed to drive? I’ve not yet filled in or sent off the DVLA form. Thanks for any help!

Hi, i just carried on driving. I informed the dvla but i didnt stop driving

Hello Katrian

You are quite right that MS is a condition which must be notified to the DVLA. What happens is that they will send you out a medical form to complete. They may decide to contact your GP or neurologist, call you in for an examination or ask you to take a driving assessment. Thereafter, they will generally give you a licence that lasts 3 years and could have some limitations attached to it.

You are permitted to continue driving in the meantime. So don’t worry about that.

I decided after a few years to have my driving assessed at a disability centre. This was because I started to worry about my braking speed. The assessment showed that I was in fact just about within legal limits. I decided to have my car adapted for manual controls anyway. I also took some extra driving lessons for using the manual controls. The reason I did this was simply because I wanted to be 100% confident in my braking capability.

Best of luck

Sue
