I understand that MS is a notifiable condition for the DVLA. Having today received a ‘probably MS’ diagnosis from the hospital, does this count as an MS diagnosis for the DVLA? Or do I need to wait for a ‘definitely is MS’? I just want to make sure that I do things right!
I was advised at my first telephone consultation with the MS nurse to make contact with the DVLA. This was before my first consultation with the neurologist who is now looking after my case. I completed the form and received a letter advising they were writing to my consultants and I gave nye received further communication requesting the return of my driving licence and I am awaiting my medical driving licence which I understand if for a 3 year period.
I would make contact with your MS Nurse for advice.
I haven’t had contact with the MS nurse as of yet, I am waiting to receive my letter with the contact details through the post (the registrar said he would be sending all of this through the post. Do you know how likely it is that they will ask me to surrender my license? I have only had 2 incidences in 8 years, neither of them physical, and only causing an affect in one eye. Decision making isn’t impared, although it does affect communication.
Hi I would wait until the MS team advise you to contact DVLA or make contact with them to see when you should notify DVLA . I suppose every case is different, I have recently been diagnosed with RRMS and been classed as low burden and like you I don’t feel my driving is impaired at all. However, as instructed by my MS nurse I made contact with the DVLA. I have had two relapses in last year, numbness in hands and pins and needles in thighs (albeit the pins and needles don’t last longer than 24 hrs do not sure if this is classed as a relapse) and a spell of dizziness in 2018 which may have been a relapse.
Have you been allowed to keep driving then? I am booking with the optician as I know I will need new glasses now, but when I originally went there at the height of the spike I still had sufficient vision to drive without glasses, but hoping that they will make the official ‘eyes are ok to drive’ whilst I am there
Hi yes i can continue to drive, I just had 14 days to return my licence, still waiting on my new licence coming through. If I didn’t return my licence there was reference to my licence being “revoked”. I attend the opticians regular as im short sighted, thankfully no change in my optic nerve in the 3 years that the optician has used the equipment. I also had to attend hospital for a neuro visual test recently. Good luck, I’m just a few months ahead of you having received my diagnosis in July.
Thanks, that’s quite reassuring as I do lots of little driving journeys. Without my car my 7 minute commute to work would be over an hour using public transport! How has it affected your insurance?
Hi, I’m with Admiral and passed over the details to them. They’ve just taken a note of it and I made sure I was sent a copy of the transcript (live chat) as proof that I had made contact with my insurance company. No affect on my premium!
Hopefully RAC will be the same with me. I think I’m going to hold fire on informing until I have spoken to the MS nurse as you have mentioned. The doctor did say ‘probable MS’ and that my letter would say the same, rather than definite MS, so I’m probably best taking their advice as you suggested in the first reply, it’s just having to wait until I receive the details
I’d wait for definite diagnosis. Even after that in my case there’s been no rush on their part to act on it. They sent a letter to advise me they’d written to my neuro - he’s already said he perceives no issue with me continuing to drive - when he writes back to them they’ll then change the type of lisence to a medical one which just means it needs renewing every x amount of years, which will be no problem unless things change.
For what it’s worth at the opticians this year they pointed out what the ‘legal to drive’ threshold is and I literally couldn’t believe it. I cannot believe people are allowed behind the wheel if that’s all they can see! Certainly stopped me worrying about any issues with my sight anyway!
