BOWELS

hello all

ive been on laxatives for about 10 years and now after such along time they are losing their effectivness.

i had a bowel scan a couple of weeks ago and it all came back ok.ive tried the peristeen system off and on for years

hopeing it would work but it dosnt for me .the consultant said its almost time for a bag,its something i am not looking

forward to.has anybody got any altenate ideas ? ive even considered a liquid diet but have been told it dosnt contain

all the goodness i need .ive already got 1 bag for my bladder (supra pubic) and realey dont want another any ideas please

many thanks den

Hi Den… well I’m assuming you have tried everything there is and nothing has helped. Is it because the stool is hard and difficult to pass, or because the muscles are no longer strong enough? I would think if it’s the muscles then a bag would be the best solution, and Den loads of people use them. They are just another way of making life easier. If it’s because of hard stool, was the consultant a neuro or a bowel specialist? IF you haven’t seen a bowel specialist I think that’s what you need to do next. Have you tried magnesium supplement? I recently had a bad experience with it (skipping heartbeats) but that was just bad luck… most people can take it without a problem and I did find my bowels were very regular when I was on it… in fact a bit on the urgent side. Might be worth trying… what else have you tried? Pat xx

Hi Den, I am at the moment crushing my way through dry All Bran and dried cranberries and drinking plenty of water! It works for me, or 1/3 Linseeds and 2/3 water leave it set and eat with pro-biotic yoghurt. My mother always started her day with cooled boiled water before her cup of tea. I wish you luck M

CHelohun.

I cant understand your fears…bowels are an issue for me too. I take a laxido, plus bran flakes, and a banana, for brekkie. My bowels are pushed themselves out before now, through pushing too hard. So i am careful about that now.

I go most days, but if nt, I take a second laxido. Have you tired them? For impaction, up to 8 sachets can be taken in 1 day, to move the stools.

Having a colostomy bag must be a worry fo you.If you do have to have one, then I hope you cope alright.

I have an spc/bag and that`s not ideal, but necessary for me, having zilch mobility.

luv POllx

hi pollx

thank you for the reply,im trying every thing at the moment with very little sucess

you good people have given me some new ideas and i hope i get some results,i have very little

mobility myself and i realise things aint going to get better ,it might come down to bag,i hope not

time will tell .

kind regards den

Loads of dried apricots and orange juice plus weetabix, but even then I have to strain mightily!

Tried senecot but with mixed success. Beer works, but causes numerous other problems…

That’s the thing with MS; whatever helps to get rid of/alleviate one symptom just causes another one to rear its ugly head. I guess it just depends which symptoms you can most easily deal with…

hi clucker,

beer sounds good but i can only drink a pint nowdays.pathetic isnt it considering a few friends and me used

to go on bike rides,do 20 / 30 miles and hit as many pubs as we could.those were the days

i didnt need any pills to make me go.beer…ive probably saved my liver, its a pity the rest of me is falling apart.

i will keep on trying all the stuff you good people are telling me.

kind regards den

I use micro enema’s and movicol having had years of problems I am now problem free go everyday sometimes twice a day but need the enema to go YAHHHH

See a three smily face post

Hi Den

I use golden linseed seeds to keep things moving. I have 2 desert spoons of them in my breakfast bowl with bran flakes and muesli, they’re really easy to take. I know it when I’ve missed them! Movicol is also good - my GP calls it ‘move it all’! Do hope you find something that suits you

hi hoppity

whats the name of your micro enema.ive got to try it.

nobody has ever told me about it.can it be prescribed or do you buy it.

kind regards den

have also sent you an email

kind regards den

With out going to the bathroom to check and that aint going to happen I am in bed I think it is called Microlette micro enema

I use I glass of mivicol each night and I go every morning

hi hoppity

thank you

I take macrogol (Movicol or Laxido) usually alternating one sachet/ two sachets daily. I also have to use a glycerin suppository to start proceedings, occasionally following in with a bisocodyl one. All this usually works, but it doesn’t take much to upset this delicate balance (like 8 weeks in hospital! I got used to being incontinent in pads because I couldn’t use a bedpan and certainly couldn’t manage the toilet for quite some time, I was too weak).

Anyway, all this might be about to change. Tonight or tomorrow morning I am going to try a Qufora Mini bowel irrigation thingy. I guess it’s pretty much like the Peristeen system without all the tubes and bags, so probably won’t help Den in any way, sadly. Any one else use it?

I found out about it at an open day put on recently by Northampton & MK MS nurses, showcasing products for bowel and bladder. My MS nurse is highly in favour of it. Fingers crossed!

hi kevadams

i hope it works for you,ive tried the peristeen system on and off for years but never had any success.

im going to try the mini enemas hoppity told me about if that dosnt work i will certainly try the qufora

system but like you i think it wont work but you never know.keep everything crossed .keep trying cos

i aint wearing a bag

kind regards den

Hi Den

No great success with the Qufora irrigation thing yet. Yesterday I waited 20 minutes and then followed in with a glycerin suppository which did the trick. They do say to persevere with it, but I feel more uncomfortable than ever. Also I find the whole thing difficult to manage, trying to reach round behind while I sit as far forward as I dare and hold on to a rail with the other hand.

Don’t you just yearn for the days when all these natural processes just happened and you barely gave it a thought??

Cheers

Kev

hi kev
