Hi Den… well I’m assuming you have tried everything there is and nothing has helped. Is it because the stool is hard and difficult to pass, or because the muscles are no longer strong enough? I would think if it’s the muscles then a bag would be the best solution, and Den loads of people use them. They are just another way of making life easier. If it’s because of hard stool, was the consultant a neuro or a bowel specialist? IF you haven’t seen a bowel specialist I think that’s what you need to do next. Have you tried magnesium supplement? I recently had a bad experience with it (skipping heartbeats) but that was just bad luck… most people can take it without a problem and I did find my bowels were very regular when I was on it… in fact a bit on the urgent side. Might be worth trying… what else have you tried? Pat xx
Hi Den, I am at the moment crushing my way through dry All Bran and dried cranberries and drinking plenty of water! It works for me, or 1/3 Linseeds and 2/3 water leave it set and eat with pro-biotic yoghurt. My mother always started her day with cooled boiled water before her cup of tea. I wish you luck M
I cant understand your fears…bowels are an issue for me too. I take a laxido, plus bran flakes, and a banana, for brekkie. My bowels are pushed themselves out before now, through pushing too hard. So i am careful about that now.
I go most days, but if nt, I take a second laxido. Have you tired them? For impaction, up to 8 sachets can be taken in 1 day, to move the stools.
Having a colostomy bag must be a worry fo you.If you do have to have one, then I hope you cope alright.
I have an spc/bag and that`s not ideal, but necessary for me, having zilch mobility.
Loads of dried apricots and orange juice plus weetabix, but even then I have to strain mightily!
Tried senecot but with mixed success. Beer works, but causes numerous other problems…
That’s the thing with MS; whatever helps to get rid of/alleviate one symptom just causes another one to rear its ugly head. I guess it just depends which symptoms you can most easily deal with…
I use golden linseed seeds to keep things moving. I have 2 desert spoons of them in my breakfast bowl with bran flakes and muesli, they’re really easy to take. I know it when I’ve missed them! Movicol is also good - my GP calls it ‘move it all’! Do hope you find something that suits you
I take macrogol (Movicol or Laxido) usually alternating one sachet/ two sachets daily. I also have to use a glycerin suppository to start proceedings, occasionally following in with a bisocodyl one. All this usually works, but it doesn’t take much to upset this delicate balance (like 8 weeks in hospital! I got used to being incontinent in pads because I couldn’t use a bedpan and certainly couldn’t manage the toilet for quite some time, I was too weak).
Anyway, all this might be about to change. Tonight or tomorrow morning I am going to try a Qufora Mini bowel irrigation thingy. I guess it’s pretty much like the Peristeen system without all the tubes and bags, so probably won’t help Den in any way, sadly. Any one else use it?
I found out about it at an open day put on recently by Northampton & MK MS nurses, showcasing products for bowel and bladder. My MS nurse is highly in favour of it. Fingers crossed!
No great success with the Qufora irrigation thing yet. Yesterday I waited 20 minutes and then followed in with a glycerin suppository which did the trick. They do say to persevere with it, but I feel more uncomfortable than ever. Also I find the whole thing difficult to manage, trying to reach round behind while I sit as far forward as I dare and hold on to a rail with the other hand.
Don’t you just yearn for the days when all these natural processes just happened and you barely gave it a thought??
I have movicol after my evening meal 1 sachet and use one enema in morning, today had to use another in afternoon . Hope you get it sorted I have spent hours and hours in agony but now I only don’t go if for some reason I forget the movicol.
