I was reading the other thread about bowel issues and peristeen, and it occured to me to ask if bowel and bladder symptoms can come and go the same as other MS symptoms, or if they’re here to stay, with perhaps varying severity? I have sluggish bowels and an unhelpful urethral sphincter that rarely cooperates with bladder emptying. Plus I’m on opiates for pain so that doesn’t help with the constipation issues. Here to stay? Or does it vary between individuals?
hiya
u have answered ur own question!
for me they are permanent issues but have various degrees of severity.

Thanks Ellie, I’m working away with senna and bisocodyl tablets at the moment but it’s not very reliable. I saw somewhere that Movecol was recommended for sluggish bowel transit - absolutely vile, dry heave inducing stuff that did absolutely nothing. The joys…
Hi I dont think movicol (also kniown as laxido) is so bad to take. Sometimes there is a slight taste of fish! But I quickly knock it back as I cant manage to go without it.
I reckon once the bowels get used to working only with laxatives, they stay that way.
My bladder problems, of wetting, urgency, retention, severe utis, were all solved with having a suprapubic catheter fitted…change day tomorrow…oh the excitement!
luv polllx
me again…
i used peristeen for 18 months-was great but now i amtoo poorly to manage it alone (i know can get nurses to do it as they have before but also have carers to fit in and its just too much!)
so i am now using senna-various amounts daily but it also made me look at diet more closely trying to get the balance right (and have lost 5stone in process!)
there is no easy answer but i think its worth experimenting to to find whats best for you (under guidance of gp of course)
hope u find ur solution, ellie
Hi Only read if you don’t mind graphic!
I posted the thread about the Peristeen pump. Really insightful conversation with a specialist today. As I always though he bldder got worse first in MS. I think the message i got was that they affect each other. So if you have impacted pooh, this can cause stop start peeing, when you try and pee this can push the impacted pooh backul, as if the bowel and bladder work in cortadiction to one and other. Made sense to me . I’m definitely going to try the system. I was worried about perfoating bowel, I’m assured no one has done this as it does not go into the bowel.
I believe this info is accurate, if i haven’t muddled it! The source was a pro.
