anyone else totally reliant on medication or peristeen for bowel

I feel.totally broken…cannot go at all.without high dose stool.softners and peristeen…my bowel just clogs up without…i am.totally reliant on help…there is no activity at all on its own…spent day in hospital as bowel impacted as had to.stop laxatives etc for a test…had to do huge bowel washout and now i know bowel is dead…feel very alone

Hi i have to use Lactulose daily at 30ml

Have to use Glycerol suppositories or cannot go…

Hi Quiane, I have used Peristeen irrigation system for nearly two years and have found it so beneficial,it has truly made a huge difference to the quality of my life. I will not bore you with the history of my experience managing constipation, I use Movicol to soften the stool and Peristeen every other day. Yes it takes a while to get use to, but when I think of the problems I had previously I would never want to be without it !

My bowel is totally reliant on Peristeen now but I am just relieved I have a solution. Is your Bladder and Bowel specialist nurse helpful? Maybe they would be able to review things with you.

The main thing to remember Quiane is your not alone, although sometimes with this beast ( MS ) it can feel that way.

Take care,Judith x

My continence nurse is a total waste of time in everyway…stopped seeing her now…im.still.finding my way with peristeen…got to decide peristeen or ileostomy long term…yes ms is the beast in everyway…as youve been using for two years is it just as reliable?..prior to peristeen did you suffer badly?..i would get so impacted i was in hospital as nothing else ever worked x i was thinking of trying movicol again

Sorry to hear your continence nurse is not useful. Do you have an MS therapy centre not too far away, as I know some centres have continence/ bladder and bowel nurses that hold clinics occasionally …no use if you can’t get to them though.

Before Peristeen my life was ruled by my bowels, I could not go at all without careful planning of large doses of laxatives, and then being housebound waiting for the result! I had many times when I was out when I had near accidents or worse. It was a nightmare.

I take Movicol most days as Peristeen does not prevent me becoming constipated, infact it will not work effectively if the stool is hard.I also browsed different forums like spinal injury, Peristeen, as they gave alot of information of users experiences plus I had not been diagnosed with MS when I started using it.Also I have to insure I drink large amounts of water.

At the back of my mind I also know I might have to consider ileostomy one day, and thousands of people have them for different reasons so I guess we would just be joining them and getting on with our lives. Hope you find a way to make the right decision that’s best for you.
