Body modifications, tattooing and piercing. Experiences needed :)

Hello hello!

So I’ve been wanting tattoos for the last twenty odd years, and finally am on the journey to get there, in the process I’d spoken to several tattoo places who didn’t have any issues with the idea. (And given the chat with the neuro, and everyone elses experiences, I doubted there would be)

However having just requested an appointment with an artist that I love, I got a phone call with a worried person checking that I’d considered the health issues there might be.

I’m totally happy that there wouldn’t be an issue with tattooing… however it has got me a little worried regarding my other plan…

I currently have a couple of body piercings that I’ve always removed during mri’s… but I am seriously considering a couple of sub-dermals.

I’ve looked into it, and it seems that titanium (not steel, or other metals) is the way to go as it’s non-ferrous (magnetic).

And that the only difficulty would be that it might lead to burns if not protected during any mri’s.

Honestly… I’m trying to work out if further mri’s are likely to lead to any different treatment of me in the future. I’m quite blase about whether I’d ever want one again.

Does anyone here have experience of either subdermals, or titanium body jewelry left in during mri’s?

Of course I’ll check with the neuro, I’m just curious.

many thanks, Gen

chunks of metal under your skin might well be problematic; you need to consult the specialists

tattoos, for me at least, are no issue at all

Having single sided deafness, I have a BAHA fitted. Bone Anchored Hearing Aid. This involves a Titanium “screw” implanted into my skull so the actual sound processor can be attached, rather like a snap fastener. My local hospital’s MRI department had never seen or heard of this (I had the procedure done in the UK about ten years ago) and the Radiographer refused to proceed with the MRI. It was an evening appointment and he couldn’t contact his superior, so I was sent away being promised another appointment. I was furious as I had printed off and brought with me, some relevant info regarding the safety of this and scanning etc. Sorry, I digress…

I have since had several scans done, prior to, and after my diagnosis, without problems. I would ring and ask the department what their take on the sub dermals are. I’d hate to be refused because of this!

Tatts, not a problem.

Probably best avoiding anything with the potential to delay emergency investigation/treatment if (heaven forbid) you were ever to arrive at hospital under a blue light and in bad trouble. MS isn’t the only thing that can go the matter.

I’m sure if someone was to arrive at a hospital under those circumstances, a few dermals wouldn’t delay anything! The team will just do what is deemed necessary.
