Hello, just a quick question. I’m going through the diagnosis process and have developed a worrying symptom with my vision. I’ve started getting lots of floaters in my vision and some small black dots. The black dots are sometimes completely black and sometimes a circle with a black outline and a small black dot in the centre. Has anyone else experienced something like this or am I being paranoid? Thanks for any input.
Hi Anonymous,
Sorry to hear that you’re going through the diagnosis process, but no, you’re definitely not paranoid.
I suffer from floaters and black dots too (sometimes I think it’s a fly so I try and waft them away) and I have done for a while not really sure if they’re to do with my MS or not (I’ve got PPMS).
Anyway, if you’ve not been already, or lately might I suggest a visit to the Opticians to get things checked out.
Hope you can get some answers.

Thank you for replying Twinkletoes, I’ll book an appointment at the opticians and I’m going to see my gp next week so I’ll mention it to him also. Hope you’re doing ok. X
Hi,
Floating shapes in our vision are usually quite normal. Just as your skin sheds old layers so the tissue in the eye grow old and become detached. As we age they tend to clump together until we see dots or squiggly threads. They are nothing to do with MS.
When you move your eyes they will move too, as the flecks are suspended in the fluid of the eyeball.
However, I agree with TT, there is nothing wrong with getting your eyes checked out. Ophthalmologists are trained to diagnose a shed load of medical conditions.
Regards,
Anthony
Hi Anonymous,
That sounds like a plan
Please let us know how you get on.

Yes I’ll definitely let you know. I need to see my gp because my legs are getting worse. If I didn’t have a job where I’m sitting all the time I’d be unable to work. Diagnosis taking forever because of all the tests and long waits for appointments. Aarghhhh!
Hello, it’s not so much the floaters that worry me but the black dots because they are perfectly round and the black circles with the the black dots in the middle are also a perfect circle. I’ve had floaters in my vision for a long time albeit not as bad as this. Thank you for your reply.
Hi Anonymous,
Sorry to hear that your legs are getting worse, hope you can see your GP soon.
Yes, diagnosis can take a long time, as do appointments so make the most of them when you’re there.

Yes I will, thank you. I woke up early this morning with pain in my right eye. The eye and eyelids are red and the vision is slightly blurry in that eye. The pain isn’t intense and more noticeable when I move my eye around. It’s like a dull toothachy type pain and it feels like I have something in my eye. It’s probably nothing to worry about but with all the other stuff going on I’m maybe turning into a hypochondriac!! Hope you’re all getting on OK.
Hello again, finally got to see my gp. He agrees that I should have a spine mri and lumbar puncture so he’s going to write to the neurologist. Hopefully if the neuro agrees I’ll finally get some answers. Hope you’re all doing OK.
Hello anon,
may I suggest you ask your GP for a referral to an ophthalmology dept so a full check can be made on your vision? This way if nothing is wrong then your mind is set at rest and if there is a problem then it can be sorted for you.
Hi Horsemad, yes I’ll do that because my vision is definitely getting a bit wierd.
Hi Anonymous,
That’s great news that you’ve seen your GP and that he’s agreed to write to the Neurologist for you to have an MRI and an LP done.
I understand you want and need some answers but unfortunately these things do take time so you will need to be patient but at least the ball’s rolling now (so to speak).
Take Care.

Hi Anonymous,
I recently had my eyes checked as like you I constantly have floaters and black dots and as how Anthony explained about the floaters (in his post) so did the Optician.
Unfortunately I cannot remember what the Optician said about the black dots but as I have had no follow up arranged I can only assume that the Optician wasn’t worried about them, HOWEVER that doesn’t necessarily mean it would be the same for you so please do get to the Opticians as soon as you can.

Hi Twinkletoes, yes I’m pleased the gp is trying to move things forward. I know these things take time but it’s the long waits I’m having in between appointments (over a year) that I’m frustrated about. I’ve had symptoms mainly in my legs and feet for over 3 years so I think a spine mri is long overdue. Hopefully it’ll shed some light on what’s happening. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Yes I’ll make an appointment asap. Thanks.
