Anyone know about MRIs and hospital communications?

Hello, I am new on here, this is my first post but I’ve been ‘lurking’ for a while I’m sorry! I have had an MRI scan of my brain and full spine today, ordered by my GP in response to numbness and tingling that I’ve been experiencing for several months. I have two questions… Firstly, the nurse explained to me that I might need to have contrast agent injected during the MRI, this did in fact happen. They scanned both brain and spine, then said they wanted to inject the agent and then they scanned both brain and spine again. The total time I was in the scanner was just over 1 and a half hours. Is this normal? I was told it would take about 40 mins. Does it mean anything? Like that they couldn’t see anything, or that they could? Secondly, I also saw a neurologist last week, by referral from my GP. She said she would get the results of the scans this week, but after my scan they said they would send the results to my GP. Who interprets MRI scans? I’m just wondering how long it might take to get the results of the scans. The neuro said she would look and write to me but now I’m not sure. If anyone has experience of this and can offer me advise I would be very grateful. Many thanks,

Hiya I have had MRI’s that have been 90 mins, so don’t think it’s anything to worry about. They were possibly just taking detailed images. I’m not sure about having the results sent to your gp, mine were sent back to my neuro who then made an appt for me to come in and discuss the results. Perhaps in a week you should speak to your gp and see what they say, and if needed book you into see the neuro again? I think things vary a lot by location, so just keep on top of things and you should get the results. Hope that helps Lx

Hi My scans have always been interprets by my neuro , at an appointment usually about 6 weeks afterwards. Gray x

Thanks for your replies. I will call my GP next week as you suggest Leora, just to find out how I will get the results if nothing else. I thought the neurologist would interpret the scans as you say Gray but a few things the nurse and radiographer said made me question that. Thanks again. If anyone can enlighten me on why they might have decided to use the contrast dye I’d be very grateful.

They use the dye to see if you have any active lesions, these will glow with the dye Gray

Hi I had my head MRI on 10th march and results are back with the neuro today just have to wait for appointment to see him now which could be another couple of weeks Although my gp has also got access to my results so I’m debating on asking him as it may cut down on the waiting game Xx

Don’t know how much help you’ll get from GP with this, mine was useless. Needed the neuro appointment to go through it with me, hope yours is better and I know it’s frustrating but you might have to wait to get some proper answers. Take care Gray x

Thanks gray Just thought it might be worth a go ! I hate the waiting game but I no so many people go through this ( I really need to be more patient) Did your Gp give different story to what you got from the neuro ?
