Is it only me? I was moving about ok, cooked myself some dinner carried it in to the table, sat and eat, then really struggled to get up from table and back to kitchen, left clearing up till later. Is that strange.
Hi Graham,
Are you sure itās the eating, and not getting hot and tired in the kitchen preparing it?
I usually feel better after eating - especially a hot meal - but I rely a lot on convenience foods. On the rare occasions I do āproper cookingā, itās not unusual for me to feel a bit dodgy by the time I sit down to eat it.
It would be interesting to see how your symptoms compare if you have a ready meal or a takeaway. If they arenāt so bad, itās probably slaving in the kitchen thatās doing it, and not the meal itself.

I always feel worse after eating, at least my walking is worse. Iām fine with a sandwich or snack but my walking is definitely worse after a meal, the bigger the meal, the worse my walking. I donāt suffer from fatigue and am not bothered by heat so for me I donāt think itās the preparation that makes my walking worse. For me, itās definitely the eating, cos Iām worse if Iām eating out and havenāt even prepared the meal myself. I think for me itās a combination of three things, I stiffen up while Iām sitting down to eat the meal, I tend to be worse anyway at that sort of time of day and the big thing is that I think the act of eating or digesting makes me worse. Cheryl:-)
the more I eat the less well I feel. Not what I eat that matters but the amount.
My next door neighbour also has MS and I know that he is at his worse immediately after eating.
Hi Graham
There could be a few different things causing it. Firstly, just the effort of cooking may have tired you out. This happens to me if I cook a meal in one go from start to finish. So I try & space things out if possible, and do the chopping in advance so I can rest or do something else before actually cooking. I also always cook extra portions to have the leftovers later, so Iāmnot needing to cook every day.
Another thing could be that eating the meal (combined with being next to a hot oven/hobs) raised your body temperature a lot, anditās very common for many of us to be affected by heat.
And the other thing could be to do with what you ate. Iāve noticed that there are certain foods that I always feel worse after. Anything involving white flour isnāt good, like white pasta & bread,or pastry. And certain fatty meats can leave me feeling rough too, like lamb or sausages.
Hope you find the culprit!
Dan
Thanks for all your comments, itās the same if I get a takeaway, yes itās the amount, can eat snake ok, a meal, and though I donāt struggle to eat it, when iv finished I feel sort of heavy!! Round the waist Iām only 73k or 11 stone. Not a big man, 5ā11. Itās been happening for a while, this particular evening I had fish, jacket potato & beans, not slaving, the wife was out with friends, lol , donāt proper cook, and not time of day thing, itās the same after Sunday dinner, yes still do that lol. We are a strange lot, (unique)

Hi sorry I know this is an old fred but I too experience the same when eating. Did you ever get to the bottom of it does it still happen??
I am interested in this topic also. I have burning skin a lot, 100 times worse if I eat sugar, feel worse after eating anything but better with s really clean diet. I think my energy gets sucked up trying to digest food and just like it hurts and creates a burning sensation if you rub my skin, I suppose food inside the body is abrasive to those nerve endings on the inside causing burning when I eat, does that make any sense??
Its probably less to do with the eating and more to do with: youāve been moving round, cooking or re-heating whatever and then you sit - poof, your muscles relax and then later your joints seize up and you find the ābatteriesā are low. I know thats what happens to me.
I do not cook or prepare meals luckily my husband takes care of that. I can be sitting, eat something sugary and I feel the burning start. I have been reading the Wahls Protocol and believe a lot of symptoms have to do with diet and exercise, the testimonials are injuring. Gearing up to start soon, very strict diet but I would easily give up certain foods for my health.
I was talking to a chap up my local MS clinic 2 days ago and, as you do, we started comparing symptoms, he said that heās far worse after eating.
Eating doesnāt effect me but cold weather does, which goes against the usual thing of heat being a problem for people with MS.
Itās obvious that we all have MS but itās never the same for everyone.
Digesting food diverts blood to the gastrointestinal system from the rest of the body. It needs the oxygen to do all the extra work.
With our systems we notice the drain on our resources even more than we used to.
Glad to find this. I was beginning to really feel weird about this. I know times I get wore out fixing a meal. But this is different for me. I feel āawakeā but in eating foods, it is like I become so sleepy I can hardly stay awake. It makes no difference in what time of day or meal it is, morning, noon or night. There has been a few times I even fell asleep while eating with food in my mouth. That was a little scary as sometimes I choke on foods while awake, it is like all at once I canāt swallow & the food is sitting deep in my throat. I also wake up gasping from my sleep like I am choking on my own saliva or somethingā¦I have wondered if others do that also? Hucky, sugar is a #1 inflammation causer. Other foods that cause inflammation is gluten, dairy, processed foods & red meat. Sadly all create high levels of inflammation that my body doesnāt respond well to. It reminds me of days long ago how people would say after a big turkey holiday feast that you get so sleepy. To me it is almost like being drugged as I just canāt snap out of it. I often times donāt fight it, just sleep. Sadly I wake up not refreshed but feeling extremely fatigued. Think I will start keeping a log of the foods I am eating and what levels of this I feel and go through to see if I respond better to some than others. I am also one who is very effected by heat & humidity.
I always feel worse after eating. Iām so weak when I get up from table and canāt do much at all. I canāt do upright chairs for long. I also get freezing cold, really shivery!
actually what you eat can trigger off worsening inflammatory responses. sugar is a no no.
gluten is also for me. I love pasta but it hates me. if i eat spag bol my legs will burn for england. anything with gluten in makes my legs burn.
its a known fact that gluten and sugar irritate and cause inflammatory responses to be worse. Oh also red meat of course is in spag bol so a double whammy. i tried steak once boy i was really on fire, so i keep away from red meat beef now.
i had a test and i am sensitive to gluten, wheat and weirdly bakers yeast lolā¦go figure.
BUT i eat it with caution as i know i will be on fire within hours of consumption.
gluten V auto immune disease is a no no. any auto immune.
so glad i read that. upright chairs for me are a no no. why is that do you think? waiting in the waiting room for doctors is a nightmare, my legs dangling literally ache and hurt me. I hate going out for a meal as i have to sit. by the time ihave eaten my meal the pain is unreal.
I recline all day at home. my family dont get it. maybe there is an explanation?
Just to add some Yang to the Yin, I get unbelievably weak if I donāt eat. After my evening meal, cooked by my wife, I pick-up and have far more energy; this applies to all the meals I eat. Iām 6ā tall and I weigh 73kg(approx). and I donāt eat huge meals but, I eat regularly (if poss). MS, it loves throwing curveballs!
Take care.
I really donāt know. For years Iāve had to use a cushion behind when eating but even that doesnāt help now. Is it extra pressure on our core muscles, spine, pelvis? Who knows?! My hip always plays up when I sit upright and now my legs get weak even after sitting. I canāt play my piano for long due to pain in my back and neck. Iām best sat with cushion on a sofa!
