Whooping cough

Anyone had a bout of whooping cough as my GP suspects I have? Just wondering if it could be another symptom of ms similar to whooping cough. Also, has anyone else had flu despite being on amantadine?

i’ve not had it but it would be unlikely if you have had imunisations, people are getting it more now but thats because there is a significant number of children who aren’t having the jabs. as for Amantadine it’s not something i’m on so no clue about that sorry!

I hope you feel better soon xx

Hi, whooping cough…in the late 70s, the medic fad at that time was dont get your kids immunised if there is asthma in the family. Well there was, but not immediate family. So docs advised me not to have my little baby done. So I didnt. Then at 2 yr old, she caught the thing. Crikey, was she poorly! It lasted 8 weeks. It left her with a weak chest for years. She`s now 35 and has no ill effects, thank heavens.

I dont think it has anything to do with MS. And as far as I know, amantidine is for fatigue.

Maybe someone else will be able to give you more info.

Thanks for your replies, folks. I’ve been coughing and choking for the last five days. Had flu like symptoms too. Got out of bed for the first time yesterday and managed to fall over. Problem was nobody could help me as my wife and two teenage kids were all in bed with flu and terrible cough, too! As for the Amantadine: it’s for fatigue and has worked brilliantly for me, allowing me to carry on working full time. Apparently though it was a drug originally developed to prevent flu for those unable to have the jab. It’s benefits for ms fatigue were discovered accidentally, I think. Well, it hasn’t prevented this illness anyway. Going to hobble off to the dr today to see if they can shed any light…

Hiya

I had a whooping cough in the 80’s. You get a persitent cough, that lasts for months. The whoop noise is also there when trying to draw in a breath during your coughing fits.

There is not any particular test for it apart from a blood test to see if there is any of the bacteria.

My wife got it in march and it took her 5 months before it was under control.

Take care

Marty

I had Whooping Cough in July, your G.P. should swab you or if you have been symptomatic for more than 3 weeks a blood test. Like all illnesses we all react differently but I have never experienced anything like it in my life. I was sick daily for almost 2 months with the coughing & spent most of my time flat out on the floor trying to draw a breath. It took 4 G.P. appointments,a course of antibiotics, a chest X-ray & then finally after my 3rd G.P. I was diagnosed the G.P. told me it was called the “Cough of 100 days!!” . Never at anytime did I make the Whooping noise. I was vaccinated as a child but it wears off. I started Rebif last January , was feeling fantastic & had actually joined a gym ( that I am still not fit enough yet to go to) but it just completely floored me. one of my friends had it last year & she was able to help me not to panic when I was unable to breathe. You get given antibiotics but that is only to stop you from being infectious. I hope it is not W.C. because it is a brutal.

Hi,

I got whooping cough a couple of winters ago during an epidemic of it in our town. The vaccinations we get as kids don’t last and you need a booster every 10 years through your adult life. Silly thing is I had my booster and STILL caught it But because of the booster I only got a mild case. I didn’t even think I had it, I just thought I had a fluey cold and went to the GP because my asthma was playing up or so I thought! She heard me cough and said, You have whooping cough!" She did the blood test and yep. Could have knocked me down with a feather. But I got off lightly. I got better in a few weeks but other friends of mine who caught it at the same time took months to get over it and one friend was in ICU with it.

For those who weren’t immunised as a kid and those who were but haven’t had an adult booster don’t kid yourselves. It is making a comeback, people do still die from this and many people are hospitalised from it and many, many more are made very ill for months. Do check and get your vaccinations up to date.

Here in Australia the Govt is now giving free vacs to all new parents to protect their newborn babies who are too young to have the vacs themselves. We have been geting awful epidemics of whooping cough each winter of late. So sad too see these preventable diseases making a come back

I really doubt it could be confused with an MS symptom. The whooping cough whoop is very ditinctive and diagnotic in itself. As for Amantadine it was developed originally in the 1960’s as an anti-viral against the Asian flu that was then circulating but apparently the current flus have 100% resistance to it so it is completely useless as an anti-flu drug nowadays.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 100% of seasonal H3N2 and 2009 pandemic flusamples tested have shown resistance to adamantanes, and amantadine is no longer recommended for treatment of influenza.

Hope this helps a bit,

B
