which wheelchair to buy?

I am going to Spain with my husband who has progressive MS. He walks with a stick but gets fatigue and then just has to stop. i am looking at getting a wheelchair that i can carry/drag along to use folded onto the bus/train etc then able to useat our destination if needed. I live away from shops so am looking on the net. I have found one called Ultralight AMW0035 which fold into a bag, (it seems a bit like a large version of a childs umbrella buggy) has anybody used one? can you tell me if you found it good for occassional use? Thank you

Catherine,

After struggling for a long time using walking stick - l eventually was persuaded to get a Rollator - Patrick from aids4disabled recommended a Topro Olympus - it has a really comfortable seat with a back rest - so l can sit on it when necessary. Sat on it now typing this. lt has become my ‘best friend’ - very spacious bag to carry shopping etc. Much easier to walk with then a stick as it holds you upright - well balanced. Gets me to the loo much faster!!! And is easy to fold up and put in the car - and also l can fold it together to get through narrow doorways. l also have another upstairs. So l get off my stair-lift and l can move off with my rollator to my bedroom.

lt gets me down the garden - places l have not been able to get to for a long time. Can carry a watering can in the bag part - can feed the hens - pick beans etc. And always have a safe seat to plonk down on.

lt gets lots of admiring comments. l keep the phone and tv remote handy in it indoors - and can put a tray on the seat so l can get drinks/meals etc. l always have one of those grab sticks on it - then l can pick or reach items.

lts kept me mobile - without it l know l would be using a wheelchair full-time. This keeps me active but safe.

While I’ve no experience of using a wheelchair and currently get by with a walking stick and the odd garden wall to sit on I would be very wary of getting something like this on line and without a “test drive”. Contact your nearest specialists and ask them to bring a few options to your house to try, at least you’ll see how easily they are to fold and load in & out of the car etc… Good luck Paul

My friends swear by Quickie wheelchairs, light & comfy
