Weak thighs

My thighs are so weak and hurt so much, standing up from a low seat is particularly painful.

Is this MS pain or am I just woefully unfit?

Muscle weakness is not uncommon in MS and the pain might well be linked. A decent physio should be able to suggest a programme that builds strength and avoids the painful stuff.

Sit to stand is actually a very good exercise, although perhaps from a higher chair.

Hello Annah.

Yes, standing up from a higher chair is better. I have to fight with the inflammation of nerve endings and cramp but I love my (low) sofa. You can’t win. I try to minimise the standing up manoeuvre but I cannot always avoid it. Do you have access to a physiotherapist? Strangely enough, I find that thinking about it and awareness are the best way of dealing with it.

Best wishes, Steve

Thank you Steve and Wham,

I have heard of being weak at the knees but this is ridiculous! I am concentrating on that ‘standing without using your hands’ exercise.

As far as a physiotherapist goes I’m not quite diagnosed with MS so presumably I don’t get access to physiotherapists and MS nurses. My brain MRI and lumbar puncture are as those of a person with MS, so now my neurologist wants to do an MRI of the neck which is next week. As he said, it would be primary progressive and there is nothing they can do for that except help with the symptoms.
