Hello - have had MS for several years, which mainly effects my legs. My walking ability has slowly deteriorated over many years and presently I can only walk with elbow crutches for a few meters. I use a wheelchair and can only stand up by pushing on the wheelchair arms and holding onto a surface in front of me. I do physio exercises every day including weight lifting, which really helps. Its become a struggle for me to get into a standing position and in recent weeks I’m finding that at times (2 to 3 times daily) there are spells when it’s super difficult for me to do so and sometimes I can’t or it takes 4-5 attempts to do so. If I wait say 30 mins to an hour, it tends to ease up and I can get into a standing position. Wondering if others have a similar problem and if they have any tips that might help.
Hi Murdina,
My PPMS diagnosis was 4 years ago and i hardly knew anything about MS except the symptoms would get worse. For the next 2 years they did. Mainly my legs which got weaker and weaker. I then started on Ocrevus which seems to halted further deterioration. Then I bought the Wahls diet book, and bought a Vitamix. And via the Wahls Protocol heard about Neufit and the Neubie. But none available in the UK! So I prepared to go to Texas for a Neubie bootcamp. Neufit then introduced me to the first UK therapist to offer Neubie therapy Apex Neuro in Macclesfield. Been there for 4 intensive treatments and followed their advice on more protein in my diet and weight training in a gym. And I am improving ! More strength and less weakness in my legs. I plan to continue treatment regularly combined with strength training in between. I would say you need to be determined and health insurance do not cover the fees. But you were looking for tips - and this is reversing my symptoms…… look at their website lots of videos showing their sucesses. Good Luck Regards Tony
Don’t know if this will be of any interest and help but have a look at @DaveC336 and his post on Thigh stiffness and weakness- under Everyday Living. Towards the end of the posts he provides a link to an MS Physio website
Perhaps starting from a higher seated position would help? A decent cushion seat should raise you up a fair bit.
You could ask a physio to take a look at you and suggest some manageable muscle strengthen exercises, which might lead to improvement.
Failing that, there are power chairs available that can raise you up and make life easier.
I hope you find a workable solution.
Thanks for this. Have found the site and looking into this.
Thanks for your reply. Will look into this.
Thanks whammel. Haven’t been on the forum for some time, so it’s good to see you’re still out there giving helpful advise. I use dumbbells on a daily basis (pretty disciplined about this) and this has made a huge difference & really strengthened my upper body. Also, do other daily exercises. As you suggested I think I need to speak to a physio and include more leg muscle strengthening exercises.
Great, hope it helps, I’m very interested if you take it further
