I have participated in MS research at CUBRIC - research in development of brain (re)training in helping MS patients with cognitive defecit. The researcher running that project is AUSTRIAN and my consultant, who is the senior member of the MS research team at the University is ITALIAN. According to the BREXIT campaigners “they don’t know” what will happen to European workers if UK leaves - even vital workers like them. I can’t see either of these academics hanging round until a decision is made - why should they?
And on a different level of job - important but often minimum wage level - if we had no Europeans coming over here to fill jobs - who is going to wipe your a*** in a care home? who is going to pick your fruit and veg? On a different measure of importance, who is going to serve your grande skinny latte at your favourite coffee shop? I would bet that it is unlikely to be a Brit - they didn’t exactly rush to fill them up to now!
Sorry for the multiple posts. My laptop is playing up and trying to post on my phone is one step above Twitter!
Well Boblatina, I think that anything will be a step above Twitter,
Geoff (a former Cardiff student)
The Tory government is dismantling the NHS not the EU.
And the thing is, the main argument for Brexit is immigration but net migration from outside the EU for 2015 is 188,000 (Statistics-net-migration-statistics | Migration Watch UK) and that is based on a points system which is greater than immigration from within the EU. So, it would appear that it can’t be managed anyway.
The problem with the Brexit argument, that immigration levels are too high & therefore we should leave, is that leaving may not change anything. If we had the same relationship to the EU that Norway & Switzerland have, we would have to accept immigration just as we do now. I’m also amazed that they keep insisting on this £350m a week claim, which is grossly misleading. If we left, we would not get back £350m a week. And as with immigration, we may still need to pay into the EU. Norway’s fees to the EU are, per capita, only about a third less that ours. And I’ve not heard the Crexit camp guaranteeing that they would replace all the grants we get from the EU.
While there’s a bit of me that likes the idea of independence, I’m worried by what seems to be a lack of a plan for what’s next. And while I don’t believe a Brexit will result in economic armageddon like the Remain camp claim, I think it will have a negative effect on the economy, at least in the short-to-medium term. And that does not bode well for those of us who are reliant on the NHS and welfare support.
Dan
Re Sarah Wollaston shifting to the remain camp, am I the only one who views this with suspicion. Surely she knew all the figures before she decided which way to go. I can’t believe that she only went in the out camp because of the NHS and then changed her mind because of exaggerated figures, which are ludicrous on both sides. If she did then she is not much of a conviction politician. If she is changing sides because of lies then she has nowhere to go as both sides will manipulate figures to suit their arguments. I honestly think the NHS is screwed whichever way the vote goes. We have a guy in charge who wrote a book advocating the abolition of the NHS FFS! Add to that the manufactured confrontation with the junior doctors and the withdrawal of student nurse bursaries and I fear we are witnessing a deliberately constructed crisis which will be solved by further privatisation which will be dressed up as “rescuing” the NHS. Personally I think the Sarah Wollaston defection was planned a long time ago.
Gary
With you there Gary.
Have to say though that the NHS was doing ok for all the years we were out and it was founded in 1948 when we were out too.
xx
Completely agree with Gary. It has nothing to do with the EU. The government is the one that is squeezing the NHS and the welfare system. They are the ones who wanted to take £1.3 billion a year from people with disability and still will, if they get the chance.
l am voting out!!! England is my home - - but it is used now as a hotel. Too many unwanted guests - and far too many waiting to come and stay.
Block up the channel tunnel - and guard our coastlines.
Hospitals cannot cope with the amount of immigrants coming in - and the schools are at breaking point.
It doesn’t seem logical that if we leave because of unrestricted immigration then the first thing that would happen would be that we would accept unrestricted immigration as the price of trading with the EU. Even our politicians are not that stupid. I would hope that any deal negotiated would be for our benefit, not that of the EU. Everyone seems fixated on the Norway/Swiss deals but they negotiated those deals and accepted them, they were not foisted upon them. We are in a totally different situation, not only are we a strong economy but our withdrawal would weaken the EU’s hand and, by extension, it’s negotiating position. Everyone seems to think the EU will still have the same clout without us but if that is the case why are they desperate for us to stay. No-one seems to be able to square this particular circle. They know our leaving will make them weaker and they won’t be able to get the sh*t back into the horse with us gone. There is a big world out there for us to trade with. Ok, there may be some pain initially but in the long term it will be a good thing. I remember when I bought my first house I thought the payments would cripple me but over time things got easier and now I live in my own house with no payments to make. What I am saying is that the short term pain was worth the long term gain.
Gary
Thankx to all, It all looks so much clearer now & my initial thoughts confirmed, by,by, Jonny
juju,stay safe,
To my mind, the best reason to stay in Europe is that Ian Duncan Smith wants us to leave.
You always know when politicians are lying - their lips move.
Geoff
urrm!! does put another dammed slant on things?? juju
Hi, just read all the comments re brexit, thought id have a flash of inspiration but alas no its so confusing. The NHS is under great threat and that is a crime, there’s such a strain on it with lots of policies and silly expectations. The welfare system and social care need to overhauled so it can back up our wonderful health service. At the moment its just another weapon for the EU debate… for both sides??? Anyway on a lighter note, is anybody else enjoying Penny Dreadful? How great to escape into a dark world of vampires and monsters…bit like the brexit debate but more realistic x
Does that mean the Politicians who are giving all the reasons to remain are also lying? Of course they all are, so I suppose it’s up to each of us to try to get some info which makes sense. Not an easy task.
She might just be worried about her salary…
Everything I buy is either from China or Korea, Japan or Australia…unless its French wine!
And I forgot to say that Chilean and Australian wines are very prominent in our shops…
