Vitamin d3 cholecalciferol 400 iu (10mcg)

Going to start my vit d3 tablets as level is very low. Been prescribed 2 a day, making it 20 mcg or 800 iu if that’s right. Is this okay, not too much for a day? Also taking a multivitamin daily but not sure how much is in there. Can’t ask doc until Monday. Any help appreciated thanks.

My GP gave me vit D 20,000iu every other day, plus B vits and magnesium daily. The magnesium is needed to help absorb the vit D, that is what the doctor told me. Advised to get levels checked every six months.

It sounds rather low, if anything, but if it is as prescribed, why are you worrying about it being too much? Or are you just worrying you may have misunderstood the instructions? It should say clearly on them how many you are meant to take, but in any event, I can’t see 800 iu daily leading to overdose, especially in someone who was low to start with. Some here are taking 10,000 per day, though I can’t say I’d recommend that, unless on medical advice, like Dinks.

My ms nurse said it was ok to take 5,000iu per day of vitamin D3 when not diagnosed with low levels.

Hi, My levels were 16 last week, below 25 is considered D deficient, above 75 is normal. Prescribed D3 oral supplements 5000iu daily, I think this is per Most NHS ccg guidelines, not sure if NICE guidelines on this? I’ll have a look. 800iu seems low? Of course free in the sun from March till October in England! Ally x

Hi again - NICE have guidelines under review for probable publication nov 2014, there are recommendations from DOH with a lot of info. My dose is for 3 months, levels to test, I think the 800iu may be a maintanence dose which can be beneficial. Can take some from foods oily fish, marg, milk, fortified cereal etc but most made from sun exposure, 20-30 mins in summer months without factor, face and arms enough to absorb. I follow all these and am still deficient so must be absorbency?! Ally
